Honda is preparing a radical update for the Accord: what is known
Honda is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Accord model, and instead of just resting on its legacy, the manufacturer is reportedly preparing such a substantial mid-life cycle update that it will feel like an entirely new generation.
The eleventh generation of the sedan debuted in November 2022, which fits right into the schedule for a planned facelift later this year. A lightly refreshed version of the current Accord with a redesigned grille and bumper already appeared in China last year, but the American version remains almost unchanged.
New design: modern and futuristic
Citing insider sources, Auto News reports that the Accord will receive a “modern and futuristic” look, moving away from the safe style of the current model. One unnamed source claims the sedan will get a new front end with a narrower grille and slimmer headlights, combined with a sharper, more angular rear bumper and new taillights.
Prototype of a Honda hybrid sedan
If the rumors are confirmed, the updated Accord could borrow many features from the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype shown last month, with its low, aerodynamic fastback-style roofline. However, one should not expect a complete copy. The production version will likely retain some existing components rather than getting an entirely new body. The same prototype is also reported to influence the next generation Civic.
Another source acknowledged that the now-canceled Honda 0 Series Saloon “went too far” in terms of style but noted that the new Accord “will find the right balance.” Inside, an increase in the infotainment system display is expected as part of creating an “ergonomic cabin.”
Gary Robinson, head of product planning at American Honda, said: “Customers will see a substantially redesigned Accord that will feel like a new model.” Robinson confirmed that the upcoming changes will be “quite significant,” which aligns with the rumors.

A high-ranking company representative added that current sedan buyers are loyal to this body type and “are more often inclined towards sporty sedans.” He also noted that sedans “perform incredibly well” in terms of affordability and fuel economy, which is currently very important for buyers.
Technical innovations: S+ Shift for the hybrid
In addition to the style update, the Accord is expected to receive the S+ Shift system, which is already used on the Prelude and Civic models for the Japanese market. This feature simulates manual gear shifting in the e:HEV hybrid powertrain, giving the driver more engagement in the driving process and making the car more exciting.
However, the regular gasoline-powered Accord is not disappearing just yet. It is reported that this non-electrified engine will last until the early 2030s, after which the Accord is expected to become exclusively hybrid as part of a larger update.

Competitors and market position
The main competitors of the Honda Accord in the US market are the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, and Nissan Altima. However, there are rumors of new sedans from Buick and Ford that could potentially intensify competition in the next few years.
According to Automotive News, the Accord, Civic, and Prelude together accounted for nearly a third of Honda’s sales in the US during the first quarter of 2026. This helped Honda increase its share of the sedan market to 15.9%. The Accord holds a 21.5% share of its segment with 37,317 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2026, placing it second behind the Toyota Camry.

Thus, Honda is making a bold bet on the Accord update, which should not only refresh the design but also add technological “features” like S+ Shift to attract buyers who are still choosing sedans. Amid growing competition from crossovers and electric vehicles, the company is trying to maintain customer loyalty by offering a more modern and exciting product while not abandoning time-tested gasoline engines. Market statistics show that the Accord still enjoys significant popularity, and such an update could help it not only hold but also strengthen its position.
