Hyundai i20 Hatchback transformed into a compact crossover

Hyundai has unveiled the new generation i20 in Brazil, allowing an assessment of the future global model. This subcompact hatchback has acquired crossover features, a new design, and modern technologies, but in Brazil it remains without electrification, using traditional internal combustion engines.

Differences of the European version

After the presentation of the new model, the company clarified that the European version of the i20 will be based on the same platform, but will have differences in design, engine lineup, interior, and suspension tuning. Nevertheless, previous spy photos indicate many common features between the models.

Design and style

From a style perspective, the i20 has borrowed elements from the Ioniq 3, albeit in a more restrained execution. The plastic cladding on the bumpers and around the wheel arches, combined with black roof pillars and a straight roofline, make it look like a small SUV, bringing it closer to the Creta model.

Among other features are a large radiator grille, full-width LED taillights with Lamborghini-style daytime running lights, a sculpted profile, a rising beltline, and 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels in the top trim.

Dimensions and interior

The Brazilian version of the i20 has a wheelbase of 2580 mm, which coincides with the previous European generation. However, the new generation has become slightly longer (4130 mm) and taller (1505 mm).

The cabin features two 12.3-inch displays forming a digital instrument cluster and multimedia system. Designers have added physical buttons and controls below the touchscreen and on the modern steering wheel. A separate climate control panel is located on the center console between the ventilation vents. In the Ultimate version, the seats are upholstered in two-tone artificial leather.

Engines and production

Under the hood of the Brazilian model are proven petrol engines that also run on ethanol. The base 1.0-liter three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine produces up to 79 hp, while the turbocharged version delivers 113 hp. Drive is front-wheel drive, paired with either a manual or automatic transmission.

The new Hyundai i20 for Brazil will be produced at the Piracicaba plant, alongside the HB20, HB20S, and Creta models. Given the similarities, the i20 could eventually replace the locally developed second-generation HB20, which debuted in 2019.

Prices in Brazil start from 99,990 Brazilian reals (approximately $19,800) for the base version with a manual transmission and reach 139,990 reals ($27,700) for the top turbocharged version with an automatic transmission. Competitors include the VW Polo, Chevrolet Onix, Toyota Yaris, and Fiat Argo.

Prospects for the European model

In Europe, the third-generation i20 is currently on sale, which debuted in 2020 and was updated in 2023. Production takes place in Turkey. The successor may appear at the end of this year or in 2027. A company representative told the Dutch publication Autoweek that the current model will continue to be sold in Europe for some time.

The new global i20 will likely share the architecture and basic design features with the Brazilian counterpart, but the engine lineup will most likely include mild hybrid setups. Minor exterior and interior differences are also expected, as well as unique suspension tuning for European buyers. Additionally, the European i20 is likely to receive an N Line sporty version and a full-fledged hot hatch i20 N with a more powerful hybrid setup.

Thus, the new Hyundai i20 demonstrates the evolution of the model towards crossovers, which aligns with global trends. Although the Brazilian version is more conservative in terms of powertrains, it sets the design direction for the future global model. The European version will likely become more technologically advanced and efficiency-oriented, highlighting the difference in priorities of different markets. The retention of physical buttons in the interior appears to be a compromise between modernity and ease of use, which may appeal to many drivers.
