It may seem like not much time has passed, but it has already been three and a half years since the presentation of the second generation Hyundai Kona. Work on the next model is actively underway. It is expected that the new model will appear no later than the 2028 model year and will be radically different from the design we are used to.
As spy photos show, Hyundai is not yet ready to fully reveal all the details of the exterior, but this prototype already has fewer camouflage panels. It seems that the new model will retain split optics, like the current version, but the solid LED strip may give way to pixel daytime running lights.

The main headlights will be located under these DRLs, but probably not in the triangular area as in the current model. Overall, the front of the third-generation Kona should become more refined and restrained, without deliberate eccentricity.
Rectangular and sharp design
Like several other Hyundai models, the new Kona will get a more rectangular shape than its predecessors. This is especially noticeable in the sharp A-pillars and side windows, which are devoid of curves. The prototype also shows new side mirrors with updated turn signal indicators.
Unfortunately, Hyundai engineers have managed to hide the rear of the new Kona well, so it is difficult to say what it will look like. Based on the front design, it can be assumed that the rear will have fewer curves than the current model, and will also get new LED taillights.
New interior and technologies
We have not yet been able to take quality photos of the Kona’s interior. One image presented here shows a large screen inside, but it appears to be used exclusively for testing and is attached to the windshield using a suction cup. When the new Kona hits the market, it is expected to be another Hyundai model with the Pleos Connect infotainment system, which consists of a large tablet-like display in the center of the dashboard.
According to Carscoops, the new Kona will be based on Hyundai’s latest K3 platform and will be sold in gasoline, hybrid, and fully electric versions. It is possible that a range-extender hybrid will be added to the lineup, although this has not yet been confirmed.
The new generation of the Kona promises to become more mature and technological, moving away from the extravagant design of its predecessor. The K3 platform will allow for a wide selection of powertrains, including an electric vehicle, which is key for the modern market. The abandonment of pixel elements in favor of more restrained lines may indicate that Hyundai seeks to make the Kona more versatile and attractive to a wider audience, without sacrificing recognizability. The emergence of the Pleos Connect system also underscores the focus on digital experience, which is becoming the standard for modern cars.
