Kia Discontinues Production of the Electric Niro Version
Kia has officially announced the discontinuation of production of the electric version of the Niro model. This decision primarily concerns the Korean market, where the updated Niro will now be available exclusively as a hybrid. The automaker explains this step as a change in strategy and a desire to focus on developing new generations of dedicated electric vehicles.
The latest generation of the Kia Niro appeared almost five years ago. At the time of its launch, it was unique in its segment due to its unusual design and the availability of three types of powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and a fully electric version. Initially, the plug-in hybrid disappeared from the lineup, and now, ahead of the facelift, the same fate has befallen the electric vehicle.
“The Niro electric vehicle, which was produced for the previous model, has been discontinued,” said Jeong Yun-kyung, Senior Marketing Manager at Kia.
The company representative also noted that the company plans to sell the remaining stock of vehicles. The question of whether this decision will extend to the US market remains open for now, but experts do not rule out such a possibility.
The Electric Niro Lost Competitiveness
If the electric Niro does indeed disappear from the American market, it will not come as a big surprise. This model has always been somewhat of an “outsider” in Kia’s electric family. Unlike other EVs from the brand, such as the EV6 or EV9, it was developed on a platform oriented towards internal combustion engines.

Kia’s dedicated electric vehicles offer faster charging, longer range, and better use of interior space thanks to a platform developed from scratch. Some of these models even offer these advantages at a lower price than the Niro EV, which became a key factor in the decision to discontinue it.
“Kia is heavily focused on electrification. Starting with the EV3 and continuing with the EV9, we have a lineup of vehicles with powerful electrification capabilities and improved product competitiveness. To focus on these models, we decided to discontinue production of the Niro EV,” explained Yun-kyung.
New Strategy and the Future of the Niro Model
Thus, Kia can fully concentrate on developing its lineup of dedicated electric vehicles while simplifying the Niro offering. Although the hybrid and electric versions of the Niro received favorable reviews at launch, last year it became obvious that they had begun to become morally obsolete against the backdrop of new models.

The discontinuation of the electric version signals a clearer strategic positioning of the brand. The future of the Niro model is now tied exclusively to hybrid technologies, while Kia’s ambitions in the field of full electrification will be realized through other, more modern models. This step reflects a general trend in the automotive industry, where automakers are gradually abandoning “transitional” electric models adapted from conventional cars in favor of pure EVs developed from scratch. Such decisions allow not only to improve technical characteristics but also to optimize production and logistics costs, which ultimately can make electric vehicles more affordable for consumers.
