Trendy Sequential Turn Signals Were Invented in 1964 (video)

The so-called sequential (or running) turn signals can be seen today on cars of different classes and brands. Initially, they appeared on high-end models, but now they can be found on affordable Asian cars or even bought as ready-made kits on Aliexpress.

However, as is often the case, everything new is well-forgotten old. And floating turn signals are no exception. In fact, they were invented more than half a century ago – they first debuted on the 1964 Ford Thunderbird. At that time, it was a joint development by Ford and Mopar.

While today’s sequential lighting systems are controlled digitally, back in the day, the signal lights indicating turns were electromechanical. They operated with the help of a rotary cam and lit up sequentially, like in a small music box. There were also solenoids and other components, but we won’t delve deeply into that. Just take a look at how old-school and ornate it was.
