Toyota launches kart production: a new step to popularize motorsport
Toyota, known for its unconventional solutions, surprises again. This time, the company has decided to venture into kart production. According to Japanese sources, production will start in Aichi Prefecture, where a special GR kart factory will be established. The first models will appear in the fall, with an annual production volume of 1,000 to 2,000 units.
The price for such karts will be set at around 300,000 yen, which at the current exchange rate is approximately $2,500. As reported by Nikkei, this is only a quarter of the cost of imported counterparts. Such affordability is expected to make karts attractive to a wide audience.
Why did Toyota decide to produce karts?
The company’s main goal is to attract a new generation to the world of cars and motorsports. Toyota plans to use its own automotive technologies and cheaper materials to keep costs low. This will not only allow them to sell karts but also stimulate interest in motorsports among young people.
Statistics show a serious decline in the popularity of karting: the number of kart racing licenses has dropped from 9,730 in 1995 to 3,250 last year. This is a 66% decline over three decades, and Toyota wants to change this trend.
Details and design of the future karts
There are no official images of the karts yet, but according to Nikkei, the model may be called GR TG-RR. The published photos show plastic body panels, a single seat, a minimalist flat-bottom steering wheel, side mirrors, and small golden wheels. Sales will be conducted through GR dealers as well as at kart tracks. It is possible that the karts will also appear in markets outside Japan.
Prospects and impact on the market
The launch of kart production is not just a business initiative but a strategic step to revive interest in motorsports. Toyota understands that future buyers of its cars grow up from karting. The low price and accessibility could make this sport widespread, positively impacting the entire automotive culture.

It is worth noting that Toyota already has experience in creating unusual vehicles, such as the hybrid buggy that revived the Scion brand. However, karts are a completely different level. They can become not only a tool for entertainment but also a real school for future racers. If the company’s plans materialize, we will see a new wave of enthusiasts who will start their journey with these affordable and technologically advanced karts.
