The Most Expensive Chinese Car Ever Sold in Russia Costs Up to $445,000

New flagship sedan Hongqi Guoya enters the Russian market

Russia is actively ramping up its own automobile production, but imports, mainly from China, continue to pour in by the thousands. However, the latest arrival is not a typical budget model. The car bears the Hongqi badge, a brand owned by the FAW group, which once produced only limousines for high-ranking government officials.

Hongqi, which translates to “Red Flag,” is one of the oldest Chinese automakers, though the influx of new players is gradually eroding its position. The solution, evidently, has been to supply the flagship sedan Guoya to Russia, where there is no shortage of oligarchs with money and questionable taste.

Dimensions and competitors

The Guoya is aimed directly at the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8, and has corresponding dimensions. Its length is 5,353 mm, width is 1,998 mm, height is 1,511 mm, and wheelbase is 3,260 mm.

Buyers can choose between two models. The entry-level version Elegance V6 costs 27.7 million Russian rubles (about $389,000 at the current exchange rate), while the Imperial V8 starts at 31.7 million rubles ($445,000). These figures are extremely high, especially compared to prices in the domestic Chinese market, where the Guoya starts at 1.4 million yuan (approximately $207,000). Thus, Russian buyers pay almost double for the privilege of owning this car. It is also the most expensive new Chinese car ever sold in the country.

Turbo V6 and turbo V8

As the name suggests, the Elegance V6 uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged hybrid V6 with 380 hp and 570 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. For Russian millionaires and billionaires seeking maximum performance, the Imperial V8 is the obvious choice: a 4.0-liter turbocharged hybrid V8 with 476 hp and 680 Nm of torque allows the car to reach 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Both versions have all-wheel drive.

Design and luxury

It appears that no significant changes have been made to the model exported to Russia. The exterior design remains unchanged, so the car continues to have plenty of chrome elements, including a massive front grille.

The interior looks extremely luxurious. In the second row, there are two large captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, as well as a reclining feature. The Guoya also includes a 32-speaker audio system, a sunroof, and plenty of high-quality leather and Alcantara surfaces.

Interestingly, even at such high prices, demand for luxury Chinese cars in Russia is growing. This indicates a shift in consumer preferences in a market where traditional European brands face logistical and regulatory difficulties. The Hongqi Guoya is becoming not just a car, but a status symbol for those who want to stand out by choosing an alternative to the familiar German giants. At the same time, the double pricing compared to the Chinese market raises questions about whether such a markup is justified solely by exclusivity and import costs.
