Nissan Considers Using Formula E Technologies for Future Electric Cars

Nissan is exploring the possibility of using technologies from Formula E to develop prototypes of high-performance electric vehicles. As reported by the Formula E team principal Tommaso Volpe, the brand is actively seeking ways to enhance collaboration between its racing division and Nismo – the high-performance vehicle department. One of the ideas is to create prototypes based on standard chassis, which will help improve the performance of electric vehicles.

“The development of Gen4 cars will be the moment when innovations from race cars begin to transition more directly into road models,” Volpe noted.

Power and Innovations

Future prototypes could use a dual-motor system, similar to the one used in Formula E cars. Currently, it produces 469 hp, but from the 2026/2027 season, its power will increase to 800 hp. Furthermore, the new Gen4 cars will receive all-wheel drive, opening up additional possibilities for integrating these technologies into production models.

Nissan already has experience in developing all-wheel drive systems for electric vehicles, where each wheel can be controlled independently. This is a direction that, according to Volpe, could become key to combining racing technologies with mass production. The company’s CEO, Ivan Espinosa, also confirmed that Nissan is preparing a series of “exciting” sports models that could become the brand’s hallmark.

Given the growing competition in the electric vehicle market, Nissan is trying to find its niche by betting not only on affordable models but also on high-performance solutions. Integrating technologies from motorsport could be a way for the company to stand out among other manufacturers, especially in the context of the general trend towards increasing the power and efficiency of electric vehicles.
