Nissan conserves a factory in Russia

The factory, located in St. Petersburg, will remain idle at least until the end of the current year. The operations at the production site were ‘frozen’ in the spring. Let us recall that the Japanese company Nissan started its operations there in the summer of 2009. Previously, cars were produced at the site through a full production cycle, including welding, painting, and assembly.

According to the latest data, the staff of the St. Petersburg plant amounted to approximately two thousand people. The company announced the temporary halt of the conveyor belt back in the first half of March. It was earlier assumed that the operations of the Russian Nissan factory might resume at the end of September of the current year. However, Reuters, referring to the publication Nikkei, now reports that the stoppage of the St. Petersburg plant’s conveyor belt is extended for at least another three months, until the end of 2022.

The plant was set up to produce several crossovers: Nissan Murano, X-Trail, and Qashqai. Out of the listed models, the latter two frequently appeared in the TOP-25 most demanded cars in Russia, reports the Kolesa site.

It should be noted that Nissan’s French partner in the alliance, Renault, left the Russian market, transferring its local assets. Thus, its share in Avtovaz was given to a subsidiary structure of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (the Institute of NAMI), and the Moscow plant was transferred to the balance of the city’s administration (now the enterprise has been renamed from ‘Renault Russia’ to ‘Moskvitch’).
