New fines for drunk driving – when they will come into force and what they will be

As you have probably heard, deputies passed a law that provides for increased fines for driving under the influence. Moreover, drunk driving has been equated to theft and fraud! That is, for driving in a drunken state, you could “serve time,” as indicated by the introduction of criminal (rather than administrative) liability.

Instead of 10,200 UAH, under the new law, the fine will range from 17 to 34 thousand UAH. The deprivation of the right to drive vehicles will be applied not for one year, but up to 3 years.

For a repeated violation, the driver will face criminal liability in the form of a fine of up to 51 thousand UAH with the deprivation of driving rights. Does this mean that this Friday evening a drive under the influence could cost several tens of thousands of hryvnias? No! And don’t listen to those who write and claim that the Verkhovna Rada has passed the law and that it is already in effect or about to come into force. In fact, this is not the case – the law comes into force on January 1, 2020!

Although, to be honest, what difference does it make? After all, a reasonable and normal person should not drive drunk…
