New GMC Jimmy may bring back iconic boxy design in battle with Bronco

GMC has long considered creating a competitor for the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, but never realized that plan. It seems the situation may change. According to preliminary data, the new SUV will receive the old Jimmy name and a retro design.

Project revival

According to reports, General Motors began work on the new GMC Jimmy alongside the third generation Canyon, which debuted in 2023. However, the project was later frozen, with the decision to focus resources on electric vehicles. This decision eventually cost the company billions of dollars.

Unnamed sources who spoke with GM Authority claim the program has been reactivated. The new model’s design will now be inspired by the second generation “Square Body” Jimmy, produced from 1973 to 1991. This vehicle is better known as the K2 Blazer, a version also sold by Chevrolet.

Ford has already proven that this formula works. The modern Bronco showed that a rugged retro-style SUV is exactly what is needed to challenge the Jeep Wrangler. GM hopes the Jimmy can replicate this success.

Frame and V8

It is believed that GM could produce the new GMC Jimmy in the United States. It will likely share its architecture with the GMC Canyon. If this happens, the company could avoid the criticism Chevrolet faced when it revived the Blazer name for a crossover SUV, similar to dozens of others in the US.

As we reported in April, the new Jimmy may enter the market with a V8 engine. This would be quite unusual, as competitors, including the Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner, do not offer eight cylinders. Even the related Canyon lacks such an engine.

It is not yet known where this motor will come from. The most likely option is a new generation of small-displacement V8 engines from GM, recently introduced as a 6.7-liter unit for the Corvette. In its base configuration, it produces 535 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque.

If GMC indeed decides to release the Jimmy with a V8 and retro design, it would be a very bold move. In a market dominated by turbocharged six-cylinder engines and hybrids, the arrival of a naturally aspirated V8 could be a powerful statement. Such a vehicle could carve out a niche for enthusiasts seeking not just an SUV but a true “American muscle” vehicle in an SUV body. At the same time, success will depend on how well GM manages to combine modern technology with classic styling and whether the company can offer a competitive price in an environment where even traditional bestsellers are becoming more expensive.
