Nissan Unveils Two Concept SUVs in Beijing
Nissan has unveiled two striking SUV concepts in Beijing, both of which will serve as the foundation for new production models to be presented over the next year. Importantly, at least one of them will go on sale in select global markets.
The most intriguing of the two concepts is the Terrano PHEV. Nissan has used the Terrano name in the past for a compact SUV sold from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s, but this new model is radically different. In some markets, it will slot between the larger Patrol and the X-Trail, known in the U.S. as the Rogue.
Nissan has revealed very few details about the Terrano PHEV, but it is expected to share its body-on-frame chassis with the Chinese-market Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV, built in partnership with local joint venture Dongfeng. As such, it may feature the same powertrain, consisting of a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 429 hp (320 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.
Robust and Stylish Design
While the design of some new Nissan models raises questions, such as the all-new electric Juke, the company has executed the Terrano well—at least in concept form. The SUV features a high ride height and an imposing front end with LED headlights and illuminated branding. It also includes a sturdy skid plate, tow hooks, and off-road lights.
The concept also boasts a range of other off-road details, including side steps, roof rails, and square black wheel arches. At the rear, there is a spare tire carrier mounted behind a large support beam.

Another Concept
The second Nissan concept is the Urban SUV PHEV. Inspired by the Nissan NX8, it is designed for young Chinese buyers. The front end features sleek LEDs and a large lower black grille. Other notable features include digital side mirrors, rear LEDs, and the absence of visible door handles, giving it an extremely streamlined profile.
The automaker did not disclose its long-term plans for the Urban SUV PHEV but confirmed that a production version of the Terrano PHEV will be sold in select global markets, not just in China.

These two concepts demonstrate Nissan’s strategy to expand its SUV lineup, particularly in the plug-in hybrid segment. The Terrano PHEV, with its potential body-on-frame construction and powerful powertrain, could become a serious contender in the SUV market, offering a blend of off-road capability and efficiency. The Urban SUV PHEV, on the other hand, targets urban buyers who value modern design and eco-friendliness. The decision to sell the Terrano in global markets indicates that Nissan sees potential for this model beyond China, which could intensify competition in the mid-size SUV segment.
