The trend of paying tribute to classic European cars continues unabated, and a new player is entering the market. The company Homologation Specials Reimagined, or HSR Manufaktur, may not yet be widely known, but its creation certainly grabs attention.
What is the HSR Type 859?
This impressive car is named Type 859. It is conceived as a revived Audi Sport Quattro SWB. The key feature is that HSR did not have to cut and modify old Quattros. Instead, the car is built on the basis of an old Audi Coupe B2, similar to how HWA works with its Evo.
Design and Body
The design of the Type 859 undoubtedly deserves attention. It includes obvious references to the original Sport Quattro, but with modern enhancements. Key details include yellow, rally-inspired headlights, an aggressive front bumper and grille, square flared wheel arches, and a large fixed rear wing.
Carbon Fiber and Weight
Every exterior panel is made of lightweight carbon fiber. HSR insists that all air vents are functional. The front splitter, rear wing, and hood louvers are also active aerodynamic components, allowing downforce to be adjusted while driving. The company claims a target weight of under 1200 kg, although it is unknown if this has been achieved.
Technical Specification
Although the car is based on an old Audi Coupe B2, the chassis has been shortened by 320 mm, and a roll cage has been integrated. Under the hood sits a magnificent 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine from the modern RS3, which in its most extreme mode produces up to 600 hp. Unlike the RS3, the engine is now mounted longitudinally, improving weight distribution.
Transmission and Chassis
Mated to the five-cylinder engine is an upgraded six-speed manual gearbox from the S4, working in conjunction with a Torsen center differential and a mechanical rear axle lock. Technical specifications also include active suspension with adjustable ride height, carbon-ceramic brakes, an auto rev-matching system, and launch control.
Limited Series and Price
The total production run of the Type 859 will be limited to just 84 units. Each car will have a starting price of 500,000 euros ($570,000 USD) excluding taxes.
This project is further evidence of how modern technology and materials allow legendary models of the past to be revived without sacrificing authenticity. Using the Audi Coupe B2 base instead of the original Quattro is a pragmatic solution that avoids destroying rare historic cars. Fitting a modern longitudinally-mounted engine from the RS3 with up to 600 hp promises not only impressive dynamics but also significantly better handling thanks to optimized weight distribution. The price of over half a million dollars and the limited run of 84 units immediately place the Type 859 in the same league as the most expensive and desirable collector cars of today, emphasizing the exclusivity and uniqueness of this project.
