Unusual reaction to the accident
If I had just parked my car and was hit by a suspect fleeing from the police, I would probably carefully get up from the asphalt, move to a safe distance from the scene, take out my phone, and start recording. However, for the DoorDash driver who was hit during a police chase in Houston, Texas, she was determined to complete the food delivery. Such persistence deserves recognition.
How it all happened
The incident occurred a few days ago and was captured by a security camera across the street. At first, the orange DoorDash hatchback pulls up to a house, but the driver could not have imagined what would happen next.
Just as she opened her car door and stepped out, holding a large bag, a silver sedan appeared, hitting the rear of her hatchback and striking her. She was thrown onto the hood of the sedan, but fortunately, she did not appear to hit her head. The food she was holding flew out of her hands and landed on the sidewalk.
Despite the pain, the delivery continues
Although the woman is clearly in pain, she limps to the house and leaves the food by the door. During this time, the suspect in the silver sedan jumped out of his car and ran through the garden of the house, followed by a Ford Explorer. Two officers began a foot chase.
Arrest of the suspect
According to ABC13 Eyewitness News, the suspect, later identified as Torrence Whitaker, attempted to escape by jumping over several fences. He did not get far and was arrested by police with the help of a K-9 unit.
The delivery driver, who requested to remain anonymous, also spoke to the outlet and confirmed that although there were no fractures, the accident caused her severe pain. As for the 34-year-old suspect, he was wanted for theft and fled from police after they attempted to stop him nearby on Northborough Drive. He was not charged with aggravated assault for striking the delivery driver.
This incident demonstrates how unpredictable the consequences of police chases can be, especially for bystanders who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. The DoorDash driver’s dedication to her job, even after a serious accident, is remarkable, but it also highlights the pressure faced by delivery workers. At the same time, the fact that the suspect was not charged with assault may indicate the difficulties in proving intent in such cases, although this issue will likely be reviewed further.
