Despite the coronavirus and the associated quarantine, many are interested to know – will gasoline and diesel become cheaper as a result of the record oil price crash. Let’s immediately note – yes, in theory, automotive fuel should drop in price by 5-7 hryvnias. But should we expect such a scenario?
According to Leonid Kosyanchuk, president of the Association of Petroleum Market Operators, one should not expect the long-awaited, expected, and significant drop in gasoline and diesel prices in Ukraine. As the industry expert stated, with the current gasoline quotes (the price today fell to $179/t compared to the “pre-crisis $497/t) and the exchange rate of the hryvnia, preconditions were created for a significant reduction in the possible retail price (up to -5 UAH/l).
However, this is unlikely to happen (at least on such a scale), because the share of taxes in the final price has increased from 47% to 73% (i.e. state revenue).
According to Kosyanchuk, the amount of excise tax alone (excluding VAT!) exceeds the contract cost of 1000 liters of A-95 by 70.3 dollars! Conclusion: if gasoline/diesel becomes cheaper, it will not be as much as one might expect.
