Next to the Rivian R2, the Tesla Model Y Looks Like an Alien from Another Planet

The New Rivian R2 Electric Crossover

In a market where electric SUVs are becoming increasingly similar to one another, standing out is no longer just a desire but a necessity. The Rivian R2 is a key model for the brand, representing its technologies in a smaller and more affordable version. For Rivian to become a mass-market manufacturer and challenge the auto giants, the R2 model must find its buyer.

The main advantages of the new affordable electric SUV from Rivian are:

The Main Competitor — Tesla Model Y

The biggest hurdle for the R2 is convincing buyers to choose it over the Tesla Model Y, which remains by far the most popular electric car in the US. As comparison photos show, these two cars have similar dimensions but look completely different.

Photos taken near Rivian’s headquarters show both cars while charging. While Tesla chose a streamlined silhouette for the Model Y, making it look like a bloated Model 3, the Rivian R2 looks different. It is more “square,” taller, and straighter, resembling a scaled-down copy of the R1 model.

Dimension Comparison

Interestingly, the Model Y is slightly longer than the R2: 188.6 inches versus 185.9 inches for the Rivian. The R2 is also slightly narrower — 75 inches versus 75.6 inches for the Tesla. The biggest difference is in height: the R2 is 115.6 inches, while the Model Y is 113.8 inches. The Rivian’s wheelbase is also 1.8 inches longer.

The ground clearance between the models differs drastically. The R2, like the R1, is built for off-road driving and offers 9.6 inches of ground clearance, unlike the 6.0 inches in the Model Y.

Specifications and Performance

Side By Side, The Rivian R2 And Model Y Look Like They’re From Different Planets

The first version of the R2 to go on sale will be the Performance Launch Edition. It is equipped with two electric motors with a combined output of 656 hp and an 88.7 kWh battery. This gives it slightly more power than the Model Y Performance (618 hp) and a greater range — 328 miles versus 306 miles for the Tesla. However, due to its lower weight, the Tesla accelerates to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, while the R2 needs 3.6 seconds.

The Price Question

The price situation is not in Rivian’s favor on paper. The R2 Performance Launch Edition starts at $57,990, which practically matches the price of the Model Y Performance ($57,490). However, if we consider the mid-level R2 Premium version with 450 hp and all-wheel drive, its price is $53,990, which is significantly higher than the $48,990 for the similar Model Y Premium AWD.

Rivian has confirmed the release of a base rear-wheel-drive version of the R2 priced at $45,000, but it will only appear in 2027. Tesla already offers two rear-wheel-drive versions of the Model Y: the Standard for $39,990 and the Premium for $44,990.

Although the R2 is Rivian’s answer to the Tesla Model Y, catching up with its sales volumes will be very difficult. Like the R1, this model seems aimed at a more niche audience and could compete, for example, with the Jeep Recon.

The arrival of the Rivian R2 in the electric SUV market indicates growing competition and expanding choice for consumers. Despite technical advantages in some aspects, such as ground clearance and off-road-oriented design, the model’s success will largely depend on how willing buyers are to pay a premium for an alternative to the market leader. The long-awaited base version could change the equation, but its delayed release gives competitors a significant head start. Ultimately, the R2 represents not just a new car, but a test of the Rivian brand’s viability in a more mass-market segment.
