New Polestar 4 SUV Spotted at the Nürburgring: What We Know About the Model
A camouflaged prototype of the Polestar 4 SUV has taken to the track for testing. Spy photos reveal a redesigned rear bumper with a tailgate and a rear window. This is likely a flagship dual-motor version.
The absence of this model from the US market can be explained by a decision from Washington, which will not allow Polestar to sell cars after the 2027 model year. This comes just as the brand prepares for its next major debut. This model is a new variant of the Polestar 4, set to be revealed in September. Shortly after an official teaser, a camouflaged prototype of the Polestar 4 SUV was spotted at the Nürburgring, giving us our first look at what American buyers won’t get.
Design and Practicality
The “SUV” name is a bit of a stretch, as spy shots point to something closer to a slightly raised estate. As a more practical option to the existing Polestar 4 Coupe, it features a flatter roofline, roof rails, and a more upright tailgate with a real rear window — something the original model lacked.
For all these changes, everything from the front forward of the B-pillars appears to be borrowed from the Polestar 4 Coupe. The lower portion of the profile, the full-width LED taillights, and the rear bumper also remain unchanged, allowing Polestar to control development costs and accelerate time to market for the second body style.
Performance and Technical Specifications
The prototype features 22-inch Performance forged wheels, Brembo brakes with gold calipers, and large ventilated discs. This equipment is fitted to the dual-motor Polestar 4 Coupe through the optional Performance Package, which also includes ZF active dampers with springs.
These same components will almost certainly carry over to the Polestar 4 SUV, tuned to suit its slightly different weight distribution and aerodynamics. Behind the wheel of the camouflaged test vehicle was Polestar’s chief test driver, Joakim Rydholm, who is responsible for refining the EV’s handling before its market launch.
As for performance, the dual-motor Polestar 4 Coupe produces 537 hp (400 kW / 544 PS), allowing it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds with a WLTP range of 590 km (367 miles). The SUV should have the same power, though its acceleration and range will be slightly less.
The single-motor version of the coupe completes the lineup with 267 hp (200 kW / 272 PS), accelerating to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds and having a WLTP range of 620 km (385 miles).
Release Date and Markets
The Polestar 4 SUV will be unveiled on September 2, with production set to take place in South Korea. Polestar has confirmed sales in most global markets, excluding the US, which has been excluded following the forced exit of the Geely-owned brand after the 2027 model year. Competitors for the model include the Tesla Model Y and Porsche Macan EV.
This news highlights the difficult situation for Polestar in the American market, where political decisions limit access to new models. Meanwhile, the launch of the practical Polestar 4 SUV variant could strengthen the brand’s position in Europe and Asia, where demand for electric vehicles with more space and functionality is growing. Using proven components from the coupe allows for a faster time to market, but whether this will be enough to compete with players like the Tesla Model Y remains to be seen.
