For Several Years, Rivian Followed Incorrect Service Instructions, Which Has Already Led to Owner Injury

American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has announced the recall of thousands of its vehicles due to a potentially dangerous suspension issue.

Scale and Cause of the Recall

The company is recalling 19,641 R1T and R1S model vehicles in the United States. The problem concerns the incorrect repair of rear steering links (rear tow link joints), which was performed since 2022. The flaw is not a factory defect but arose due to improper assembly during certain service work.

According to the report, an outdated service procedure was used during the servicing of these joints between April 1, 2022, and March 10, 2025. This resulted in the parts not being assembled properly, as required by the design.

Rear steering links that were not assembled “in accordance with the design intent” may experience unexpected loads.

Consequences and Incident

Over time, such a joint can completely separate while the vehicle is in motion, significantly increasing the risk of an accident. This threat is very real: one such incident has already occurred, resulting in minor injuries. This event underscores the seriousness of the identified defect.

Details on Affected Vehicles

Although the total number of affected vehicles is nearly 20,000, the manufacturer itself estimates that only about 1 percent of them (approximately 196 vehicles) may actually have this defect. The majority of the recalled models are R1T pickups (12,610 units), with the remainder being R1S SUVs (7,031 units).

Starting February 24, Rivian will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles. Dealerships have received instructions to inspect and, if necessary, replace the bolts of the rear steering links using an updated service procedure that corrects the previous error.

Other Recent Rivian Recalls

This is not the only recall Rivian has conducted recently. Back in December, the company announced a recall of nearly 35,000 EDV electric delivery vans due to an issue with the driver’s seatbelt pretensioner, which could be damaged through repeated improper use.

Such incidents point to the challenges faced by new automakers, especially in the electric vehicle segment, where rapid production scaling and service network expansion sometimes outpace the refinement of all procedures. Successfully and promptly resolving issues like this recall is critical for building customer trust and ensuring the brand’s long-term reputation in a competitive environment. For owners of affected vehicles, the most important thing now is to await official notification and strictly follow the dealership’s instructions for the free repair of the fault.
