Mercedes-AMG is preparing a powerful electric sedan
AMG recently released teasers of its new sedan, announcing a full reveal of the model this year. The car, which does not yet have an official name, will be built on the new AMG.EA platform with powerful electric motors from the British company Yasa. Total power is expected to reach four digits.
Each of these motors delivers approximately 480 hp and 800 Nm of torque, which is impressive given their compact size and weight of just 24 kg. With three motors on board, the top version could exceed 1000 hp.
Design and expectations
New spy photos have for the first time allowed a glimpse of the electric vehicle in daylight without camouflage. However, the design does not fully align with the expectations set by the 2022 concept car.
Mercedes has a certain reputation for exaggerating in concepts and falling short in production models, as happened with the Vision EQS and the EQS.
Instead of the dramatic fender flares seen in the concept, the production version features a rather flat hood. Although it is lowered, giving the front end a more sporty appearance. The star-shaped LED daytime running lights are housed in conventional headlight units rather than being integrated into the body, as in the concept.
A comparison with the Porsche Taycan, which is nearly identical to its Mission E concept, may disappoint Mercedes fans. However, final judgments should be reserved until the official premiere. Will AMG succeed in creating a worthy competitor to the Taycan, or will the German brand once again fail to meet expectations?
Recent tests show that engineers are working on dynamics and handling—one prototype was spotted on a racetrack. This offers hope that, despite certain design compromises, the new electric vehicle may deliver a true sports driving experience.
