There are different indices that allow assessing the standard of living in a particular country: the Big Mac index, the iPhone index, and of course, the gasoline index. During the quarantine and the global pandemic, the cost of fuel in Ukraine decreased, although purchasing power also fell. Therefore, we decided to calculate how many liters of fuel can be purchased in Ukraine on an average salary.
The average salary in Ukraine (according to the latest official data) is 11,446 UAH. Although, of course, not all of our fellow citizens earn that much.
At the beginning of the year, TopGir already wrote that one salary is enough for a Ukrainian to buy 395 liters of A-95 gasoline, which is actually quite a lot compared to 5 and 9 years ago when the paycheck was enough for less than 300 liters. How are things now?
As of October, taking into account the drop in oil prices and, as a result, gasoline prices (average cost – 24.19 UAH per liter), it turns out that one salary is enough for the average Ukrainian to buy 473 liters of 95th gasoline. This is the highest figure in the last 10 years!
It turns out that during the “remote work” period and the tedious adaptation to a new way of life and work in Ukraine, it became possible to buy 17% more gasoline with one salary.
Progress, improvement? We can say more – housing rent, hotel accommodation, dining in restaurants, and some food items have become cheaper. However, gas prices, utility services have risen, and many people’s income levels have fallen. Conclusion? Trips to the gas station have become less intimidating than trips to the housing office.
Interestingly, when it comes to the iPhone index, the situation is somewhat different. We recommend reading how long a Ukrainian has to not eat or drink for a new iPhone 12.
