For Opel in Ukraine, 2019 became a year of reboot. The lineup of the German brand was radically updated, and new Opel crossovers arrived in our country. The flagship Opel Grandland X has already been tested, and now it’s time for its younger brother, the Crossland X.
The new Opel Crossland X is one of the first models created under the wing of the PSA Group. Notably, it shares the platform with the Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Aircross.
The Opel crossover has become the successor to the Meriva and Mokka models. The small 4.2-meter car features a youthful sleek design with short body overhangs and a high window line. The roof shape is emphasized by a chrome molding. The lower part of the body is covered with wide plastic panels.
The interior trim of the Opel Crossland X is accented with contrasting orange stitching.
The layout is familiar from the Astra and the older Grandland X. The front panel is V-shaped and covered with soft textured plastic on top. The dials are deeply recessed and separated by the trip computer display.
The central 8-inch touchscreen for multimedia and navigation is slightly turned towards the driver. The audio and climate buttons are relatively few and large.
Below are USB ports and even wireless charging for a smartphone — not bad for a car of this class. There’s a small niche for small items to the left of the steering wheel and a lockable compartment behind the handbrake.
The range of adjustments for the driver’s seat and steering column is more than sufficient. The front seats of the Opel Crossland X are comfortable with adequate lateral support, and for convenience, there is a folding armrest. They are equipped with heating, as are the steering wheel and windshield.
The seating position is quite high. The rearward visibility is good, but the thick front pillars slightly obstruct the side areas of the car.
There is plenty of room in the back for passengers of average height, and the headroom is pleasantly surprising. Of course, it’s more comfortable for two in the back, although three won’t feel cramped. Besides, the test car’s rear seats are equipped with horizontal adjustment.
Depending on the position of the seats, the trunk volume of the Opel Crossland X is 410-520 liters, and if you fold them, it results in 1255 liters. The trunk has a two-level design, and beneath it, there’s a temporary spare wheel.
The top version of the Opel Crossland X includes a keyless entry system, dual-zone climate control, cruise control with a speed limiter, light and rain sensors, a rearview camera, and parking sensors. There are also systems for recognizing road signs, lane control, and blind spot monitoring.
In our market, the new Opel Crossland X is offered only with a 1.2-liter 110-hp turbo engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The engine is quite lively for its power and adequate for city conditions. Peak 205 Nm of torque provides sufficient drive for the crossover, noticeable from about 2000 rpm.
At the same time, the three-cylinder engine is quiet even at high revs, and there are no vibrations. Although there’s no need to rev it much. By the way, the city fuel consumption was surprisingly consistent with the declared 8.3 l/100 km.
The automatic generally works smoothly, although some jolts during shifts are noticeable at low speeds.
The ride in the Opel Crossland X is smooth and the suspension easily handles most potholes. Just right for our roads and the 16-inch wheels with high 60-profile tires. At the same time, the crossover doesn’t lean much in corners. The 178 mm ground clearance is enough to drive up a curb.
Overall, it’s perfect for the city. The car’s steering is very light and not the most informative. However, the noise insulation is pleasing — the cabin is quiet, and especially the underside of the crossover is well insulated. The brakes are surprisingly sharp and the pedal is short-stroked.
You can buy the Opel Crossland X in Ukraine at a price from 467,800 hryvnias.
The top version Innovation will cost 535,500 hryvnias.
