There are not many large and powerful sedans left in our market for reasonable money. The widespread fascination with crossovers has led to their gradual extinction. And those that remain are no longer sold here – neither the Subaru WRX nor even the Toyota Camry 3.5 are imported to Ukraine. However, there are exceptions to the rule – recently, the charged Mazda 6 Turbo appeared in our country.

At first glance, it’s a typical, well-known Mazda 6 with a dynamic profile and a wide grille. The sports sedan lacks body kits and even a small spoiler on the trunk lid. The only hint of its powerful version is the 19-inch wheels. In general, it’s turned out to be a so-called sleeper – a fast car that doesn’t stand out externally.

The interior features Nappa leather, suede, and wood – as it’s the top version. Everything is familiar here too – a compact three-spoke steering wheel, a dashboard with a speedometer display in the center, and a branded audio system unit near the automatic transmission lever. The multimedia display is touch-sensitive, but it locks while driving, and you need to use the joystick.

The front seats are equipped with electric adjustment (the driver’s seat with memory), as well as heating and ventilation. They are, by the way, the same as in the standard Mazda 6 2021 – they haven’t been replaced with sports seats. In principle, there’s no need – the seats hold the back well and are comfortable. The seating position in the six is traditionally low.

The rear passengers also have heated seats and their own USB ports in the armrest. There’s plenty of legroom in the second row, but the headroom is limited – at a height of 180 cm, it feels cramped. The trunk volume is 429 liters.

The Mazda 6 Turbo in Ukraine is available only in expensive versions. The top configuration (called Tor+) includes keyless entry, an electric package, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, Bose audio system, rain and light sensors. Plus, a set of electronic assistants – automatic braking, lane-keeping, blind-spot monitoring, and driver fatigue control.

The 2.5-liter 231-horsepower turbo engine is familiar to us from the Mazda CX-9 crossover. An interesting detail: in the US, this engine’s rated power of 231 hp is indicated using low-octane gasoline, and if the octane number is more than 92, the four-cylinder delivers 250 hp.
We have no reason not to trust the Americans – the engine indeed performs very well. Although it’s calm at low revs – you can leisurely drive around the city at 1500 rpm. The four-cylinder wakes up after 2000-2500 rpm when a very decent 420 Nm of torque becomes available. There is always reserve power for overtaking – just a slight press of the gas pedal is enough.

The Mazda 6 Turbo accelerates to 100 km/h in 7 seconds, and the even acceleration continues up to about 140-150 km/h. The maximum speed is 239 km/h. The declared fuel consumption is 10.7 l/100 km in the urban cycle and 5.9 l/100 km on the highway. Not so little, but honest – during our rather active driving, mainly in the city, it was about 11-11.2 liters.

The sedan is not the successor to the Mazda 6 MPS – it has a quiet exhaust and in terms of handling, it’s not much different from the regular six. The suspension hasn’t been made stiff, and riding on 19-inch wheels is quite comfortable – which matters in a large family model. The steering is precise and weighty. The brakes have also remained unchanged, although they are quite sufficient for the sedan – there are no complaints about deceleration.

The new Mazda 6 Turbo is a fast car for those who don’t want to stand out or sacrifice comfort. Yes, the sedan isn’t the cheapest – prices start from 1,062,500 hryvnias, and the Tor+ version will cost 1,109,500 hryvnias. But on the other hand, the new Volkswagen Golf GTI now costs about the same.
