Testing of the Updated Ten-Year-Old Volvo XC40 Spotted on the Roads

Volvo XC40 to Receive Another Facelift in 2027

The Volvo XC40 has become one of the most enduring products in the Swedish lineup. It was first shown as a concept in 2016, series production started in 2017, and the first update took place in 2022. There are rumors about the next generation, but new spy photos suggest a different scenario for the near future. The current model is preparing for another cycle of updates, and the presentation could take place in 2027.

Testing in Spain and First Images

The testing season in hot conditions has already begun in Spain, and Volvo’s engineering teams are actively taking advantage of the challenging weather conditions. Shortly after we spotted a prototype of the updated XC60, our photographers captured the modernized XC40.

The prototype with light camouflage retains the characteristic side windows and sculpted profile of the current model, but the front has undergone changes. The headlights appear narrower, with more pronounced contours and LED “Thor’s Hammer” graphics, while the updated grille is deliberately hidden under a piece of camouflage.

Front and Rear Design

The front bumper has a cleaner design, losing the side air intakes found on its predecessors and adding thicker protection on the protruding chin. At the rear, the traditional L-shaped lights are covered with black tape — an attempt to conceal the updated LED graphics.

Other changes include a flatter surface on the rear doors and smaller reflectors in the lower part of the rear bumper. The dual exhaust pipes protruding from the rear are temporary — on the production model, they will be replaced with a different design.

Interior and Multimedia

Several spy shots also offer a glimpse inside the cabin. The biggest change appears to be a new vertically oriented infotainment display, similar to the one installed in the EX30. Volvo may also add new materials and upholstery options.

Powertrains and Competitors

The engine lineup will most likely retain the existing options: mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric (EX40). Internal combustion engines may receive updates to remain compliant with Europe’s stringent environmental regulations for a few more years. Volvo engineers may also tune the chassis for a more comfortable ride.

The second facelift of the XC40 is expected to take place in 2027, when the model turns ten years old. The electric EX40 will almost certainly receive the same updates, differing only in a few stylistic elements that mark it as zero-emission. The main competitors remain the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3, and Alfa Romeo Tonale.

This second facelift indicates that Volvo is in no hurry to completely refresh its model lineup, preferring evolutionary changes. In the face of fierce competition in the compact crossover segment and a gradual transition to electric vehicles, this decision allows the company to extend the life cycle of a successful platform while adapting it to new market demands. The interior update, particularly the new display, points to Volvo’s desire to unify the digital experience across its models, making the XC40 more modern without a radical change in architecture.
