Toyota has introduced the updated version of the GR86 for 2027, which has received a number of minor but important improvements. This affordable sports car continues to delight fans, even though such models are becoming rare in the modern market.
Exterior and Interior
Although the second generation of the GR86 is already in its fifth year of production, a full-fledged facelift has not taken place. The only external change was the addition of a new body color — Thunder, which is a solid gray shade.
In the cabin, the changes are also minimal. For the Premium trim, the finish has been updated: switches, handles, and the gear shift lever now feature a black coating with a cast iron effect. According to Toyota, this is done to create a more cohesive interior look.
In addition, a new interior option has appeared — Cockpit Red. It includes black seats with ultrasuede and red leather inserts on the side bolsters. Buyers will also get red accents on the doors and floor mats.
Technical Improvements
Under the hood remains the familiar 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine with 228 hp (170 kW) and 249 Nm of torque. With a six-speed manual transmission, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. A six-speed automatic transmission is also available, adding 0.5 seconds to this figure.
Engineers have refined the throttle calibration to provide a smoother and more linear response to accelerator pedal input. The shift lock facet between fourth and fifth gears has also been widened by approximately 0.02 inches, improving the feel during downshifts during active driving.
Safety and Availability
The safety system now includes a monocular camera that helps detect objects at intersections. The stereo camera has also been improved: its recognition range has nearly doubled, enhancing the detection of vehicles ahead when using cruise control.
The new 2027 Toyota GR86 will arrive at dealers this summer. Prices will be announced closer to the start of sales. The coupe will be available in base and premium trims, while the Yuzu Edition seems to be discontinued.
The GR86 updates focus on improving the driving experience, which is a logical step for a model that has already established itself as one of the most affordable sports cars. Although the changes are not drastic, they demonstrate Toyota’s commitment to keeping the model relevant in a market that is gradually moving away from traditional sports coupes. The absence of a serious facelift may indicate that the company is focused on preparing for the next generation, which, according to rumors, could be created in collaboration with Mazda and receive a turbocharger.
