Toyota reduces RAV4 production as dealers count stocks in hours

Toyota reduces production of RAV4 and other models due to global issues

Toyota has announced a reduction in overseas production by 100,000 vehicles until February 2027. This decision is linked to ongoing geopolitical difficulties and changes in demand across various markets.

A month ago, the company warned that the conflict in Iran and the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz would force it to remove 83,000 vehicles from its overseas production schedule by November. It is now known that the reductions will continue into next year. The new RAV4 is once again among the most affected models.

Reasons for production reduction

Updated data shows that overseas production will decrease by approximately 100,000 units until February 2027. Due to high fuel prices, demand for new cars remains low in the Middle East, North Africa, and East Asia. Key suppliers have already received instructions to plan their operations based on the new production forecast.

Impact on the RAV4

The new RAV4, which is one of the most important vehicles in Toyota’s lineup, will be affected by these changes. The company will reduce production of standard internal combustion engine versions of the RAV4, despite recently resuming production of hybrid models at its Kentucky plant after delays in retooling. Previously, Toyota estimated losses from disruptions at approximately 55,000 RAV4 sales in the US this year.

The company did not specify exactly how much RAV4 production will be reduced overseas, but noted that it will increase Japanese production of the RAV4 and Land Cruiser 250 by 4,200 units in the second half of the current fiscal year to partially offset international reductions.

Situation at dealerships

This will not help the thousands of customers eagerly awaiting the new RAV4, especially in the US. As recently reported, some dealerships have hundreds of customers waiting to receive their new RAV4s. Moreover, several dealerships now estimate RAV4 inventory in hours, rather than days, due to the model’s immense popularity.

Other models at risk

Other models will also be affected by Toyota’s production reduction, especially in China. These include the bZ3X, bZ7, and the Chinese version of the Camry. According to Automotive World, Toyota’s latest electric vehicles in China have failed to attract buyers from local brands, including BYD, Nio, and Xiaomi, forcing the company to reconsider its sales plans for this market.

The situation surrounding the RAV4 demonstrates how vulnerable even the most powerful automakers can be to global challenges. The combination of geopolitical tensions, logistical problems, and changes in consumer preferences creates a difficult environment for Toyota. Particularly striking is the contrast between the enormous demand for the RAV4 in the US and the need to reduce its production due to external factors. At the same time, the failure with electric vehicles in China indicates that even industry giants can lose ground in key markets where local brands offer more competitive products. This forces Toyota to seek new strategies for balancing global production with local needs.
