Lucid’s Cosmos electric vehicle shown in patent drawings at a price of less than $50,000

Lucid’s New Step: Patent Images of Cosmos

Lucid, known for its luxury electric vehicles, is preparing to launch a more affordable model. New patent images likely showcase the upcoming Lucid Cosmos. This is one of three more accessible cars to be built on the company’s new mid-size platform.

These sketches may provide the best look yet at the vehicle that Lucid believes will bring the brand to the mass market. The Tesla Model Y and the new Rivian R2 are already waiting there.

Key highlights from the patents:

Exterior Design and Features

Like the larger flagship SUV Gravity, the Cosmos has a similar front end. A large LED strip stretches across the nose above a raised lower grille. The hood gets angular creases that start near the center and spread outward, like on the Gravity.

The side profile features softer lines. Two parallel lines along the body are smoother than on the Gravity. The rear of the crossover features a similar ‘dovetail’ design as the larger Lucid. A small roof spoiler improves aerodynamics, and relatively long horizontal lighting wraps around the rear side. At the back, the Lucid lettering looks larger than on the Gravity. The rear taillights appear to be separate rather than a continuous strip across the entire trunk.

Possible Trim Levels

The images show different equipment options. For instance, the front of the Cosmos in some drawings has a more pronounced lower grille that protrudes further forward with a larger opening than in others. Rear sketches also indicate this. At least one version has large, almost triangular vents or lighting structures similar to those used in rally versions of other manufacturers.

This aligns with previous information that the Cosmos will be a sporty model in the lineup. Lucid claims it will accelerate to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds.

Interior and Cabin

The patent images also reveal interior details. The dashboard consists of a single long display that serves as both the instrument panel and the infotainment screen. On the center console, two dials are placed side by side, with storage compartments behind and beneath them. The console also shows ventilation vents for rear passengers and a small nook for items above them.

Overall, the Cosmos borrows some design cues from the Gravity but has its own unique style.

Price and Competition

The starting price of the Cosmos is expected to be somewhere in the upper $40,000 range, possibly reaching $70,000 for top trims. This puts it in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y and the new Rivian R2. The vehicle is based on a new architecture and uses new motors aimed at reducing costs for Lucid and its customers. This platform will also underpin the Lucid Earth models and a third model to appear later.

To imagine how the patents might look in metal, renders were created using generative AI. They should be treated with caution, as they are merely an interpretation of a few line drawings.

This news signals a strategic shift by Lucid toward the mass market. The company, which has so far been associated with premium and expensive electric vehicles, is now trying to compete in a segment dominated by Tesla and Rivian. The success of the Cosmos will depend not only on its design and performance but also on Lucid’s ability to ramp up mass production and offer a competitive price. The emergence of a new platform and motors shows that the company is serious about reducing costs, a key factor in gaining market share. At the same time, maintaining the distinctive style and high efficiency that Lucid is known for will be an important advantage in the battle against competitors.
