On Friday, a tornado hit the Rivian plant, but R2 production started anyway

Start of Rivian R2 Production

After more than two years since the concept was presented, production of the Rivian R2 electric crossover has officially begun at the plant in Normal, Illinois. This is especially impressive considering that last Friday, a tornado passed through this city, causing damage to the production site.

The company did not provide details about the production process itself but noted that the first assembled vehicles will undergo a series of final quality checks and validation. If everything goes successfully, the first deliveries to customers will begin this spring.

A Major Milestone for the Brand

The manufacturer called the start of production a “milestone” for the R2 model, meaning that “the production process is verified, every weld is checked, every line of code is validated, and every interior material is carefully studied to meet the high standards we have set for ourselves and our community.”

Rivian’s Chief Operating Officer, Javier Varela, added that the R2 “represents significant progress in engineering excellence and production efficiency, providing substantial improvement in cost and quality.” CEO RJ Scaringe called the car “incredible” and expressed anticipation for when customers finally receive their electric vehicles.

Specifications and Trims

The R2 model debuts in the Performance trim with a starting price of $57,990. It is equipped with an all-wheel-drive system featuring two motors with a combined output of 656 hp, providing 825 Nm of torque. This powertrain allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds and have a range of up to 330 miles (531 km).

The top trim is well-equipped: a Black Crater interior with Birch wood trim, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, heated rear seats and steering wheel, and a premium nine-speaker audio system.

Early models also receive the Launch Package, which includes a lifetime subscription to Autonomy+ and a towing package allowing towing of up to 1996 kg. Buyers will also receive an anodized green key fob and the option to choose a special Launch Green exterior color.

More Affordable Variants on the Way

A more affordable R2 Premium version is planned for release later this year. Its starting price will be $53,990, and its dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain will develop 456 hp and 727 Nm of torque.

The R2 Standard lineup is set to debut in 2027 and will offer short-range and long-range options. The base version will cost “around $45,000” and will be able to travel over 275 miles (443 km) on a single charge.

The start of R2 production is a key moment for Rivian, as the company seeks to expand its market presence with a more affordable model. The success of this crossover could significantly impact the brand’s financial stability and its ability to compete with giants like Tesla. The rapid resumption of plant operations after the tornado also speaks to the company’s operational efficiency and resilience in the face of challenges. The price and specifications make the R2 an attractive proposition in the rapidly growing electric SUV market.
