Today, the winners of the North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) competition were announced. Despite Americans’ love for big and gas-guzzling vehicles, this year saw an unexpected choice for a sedan, and the best among crossovers also turned out to be somewhat untraditional. Let’s start with the passenger car. For the first time since 1994, Americans and Canadians awarded the title of the best car of 2021 to the South Korean Hyundai Elantra, which, by US standards, is considered not just a compact sedan, but an “unfinished pony car” against the backdrop of the most popular cars in America, which are huge pickups, station wagons, and full-size SUVs.
Speaking of SUVs.
Among the Utility class vehicles (small SUVs and crossovers), the jury awarded the victory to an electric SUV which was presented in 2020 – namely, the Ford Mustang Mach-E. In the homeland of Tesla and “gas guzzlers,” the new Mustang outran the new Genesis GV80 and Land Rover Defender.
Speaking of the Truck category (the very popular one, dominated by pickups and full-size SUVs), as per long-standing tradition, the first place was won by the Ford F-150.
