The Biggest News For Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Hatch Comes From 1980

Toyota’s updated 2026 Corolla Hatchback is getting a few tweaks for the new model year. Arriving shortly after the equivalent Corolla sedan, the compact model’s lineup now includes a retro-inspired special edition announced earlier this year, upgraded safety tech, new trim structure, and modest price adjustments.

Replacing the discontinued Nightshade trim is the new FX Edition, a limited-run model that pays homage to the 1980s Corolla FX16. Meanwhile, standard features across all trims have been improved, particularly in the safety department.

The 2026 Corolla Hatchback is now offered in SE, FX Edition, and XSE trims. Pricing has inched up slightly across the board. The base SE is now $24,180, marking a $400 increase, while the top-tier XSE is up just $95. The new FX Edition comes in at $26,780, which is a $2,000 bump over the outgoing Nightshade.

Under the hood, things remain unchanged. All Corolla Hatchback trims are powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 169 hp (126 kW / 171 PS) and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) of torque. The engine is paired exclusively with a Dynamic Shift CVT that sends power to the front wheels.

The base Corolla SE comes standard with 16-inch wheels, an 8-inch infotainment display, a wireless charging pad, fabric upholstery, and a six-speaker audio system. Furthermore, the standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 has gained the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

New FX Edition with ’80s Vibes

The biggest news for the 2026MY is the new FX Edition, limited to just 1,600 units. Inspired by the 1987 Corolla FX16, it leans into retro styling but doesn’t include any performance or chassis upgrades to back up its sportier looks.

The FX Edition rides on 18-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss white, with black lug nuts. While the wheel design looks nearly identical to last year’s Nightshade trim, the white finish gives them a more sharper presence. Additional exterior touches include a gloss black roof spoiler and a vintage-style emblem on the tailgate.

Inside, the FX comes standard with the 10-way Sport Touring heated driver’s seat with black upholstery and suede inserts. To spice things up, the company has applied contrasting orange stitching on the seats, door panels, steering wheel, and gear shifter. The digital cockpit comprises a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch infotainment, as with the flagship XSE trim.

Put simply, the FX Edition distinguishes itself from the discontinued Nightshade with a gloss black rear spoiler, white-finished wheels, unique badging, a digital instrument cluster, Sport Touring seats, and the addition of a Blind Spot Monitor.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback will arrive at US dealerships this fall.
