Rimac Doubts the Real Power of YangWang U9 Track Edition

The head of Rimac Automobili, Mate Rimac, has expressed serious doubts regarding the claimed power output of the Chinese hypercar YangWang U9 Track Edition. The car is credited with a record 2,977 horsepower — 870 hp more than the Rimac Nevera R. However, according to Rimac, such figures could be the result of a misinterpretation of technical data.

Rimac emphasized that most modern Chinese electric vehicles operate on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are unlikely to be capable of briefly providing the required current to achieve such performance. For comparison, the Nevera R with the latest batteries is limited to approximately 2,107 horsepower. Even if the battery is capable of delivering a greater impulse, the entire powertrain must be designed for such loads.

Another factor preventing the claimed power from being realized is the car’s contact with the road. Rimac noted that the Nevera R has already reached the limits of the best road tires’ capabilities and doubts that the YangWang U9’s tires could withstand even close to such loads.

Official data from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology indicates that each of the U9’s four electric motors develops 744 horsepower. However, there is no confirmation yet that all motors are capable of operating at such peak values simultaneously.

It will be interesting to observe whether YangWang can truly surpass the European giants of the electric industry, or if this record will remain only on paper.
