A serious accident that could have ended in tragedy occurred on Route 3 North in Massachusetts. A black BMW entered the oncoming lane, causing a head-on collision. This incident is the latest in a series of similar cases that could lead to changes in state law.
Details of the accident on Route 3 North
The collision occurred on Wednesday. Footage from a dashcam of one of the drivers involved shows a black BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe (or, possibly, an i4) veering off the road, then accelerating across a wide grassy median separating the opposing traffic lanes. The car narrowly missed a silver SUV before crashing into the vehicle that had the dashcam installed.
According to the father of the driver of the car with the dashcam, the man was returning home from work. He had only purchased the car in October. Local authorities transported one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Aerial images published by WCVB show the damaged car to be an Acura Integra. An orange Honda Fit and a black sedan were also caught in the BMW’s crash zone.
Reaction from state authorities
This accident occurred shortly after the death of Massachusetts State Police Officer Kevin Trainor, who was killed by a wrong-way driver on Route 1. Trainor’s death prompted state Senator Bruce Tarr to propose an amendment expanding the wrong-way driving prevention program.
Starting in 2022, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has been using solar-powered warning lights and cameras to alert drivers entering an exit ramp in the wrong direction. According to NBC Boston, between 2020 and 2025, there were 338 wrong-way crashes on Massachusetts divided highways, resulting in 42 deaths.

This case highlights the need to strengthen road safety measures. The use of modern technologies, such as cameras and warning lights, can help reduce the number of similar accidents. However, as statistics show, the problem remains acute, and additional efforts are needed to prevent tragedies.
It is worth noting that such incidents are often caused by driver inattention, fatigue, or alcohol intoxication. Therefore, it is important not only to improve infrastructure but also to enhance driving culture and the responsibility of all road users.
