Alfa Romeo confirms return to its roots: a new compact hatchback to replace the Giulietta
For many years, Alfa Romeo bet exclusively on crossovers, considering them the universal answer to market demands. However, the brand has now officially confirmed it is returning to creating a car that once saved the company. This refers to a modern equivalent of the legendary model 147, which once won the prestigious “Car of the Year” award.
Legacy of the 147 and a new course
The 147 model, which appeared in 2000, became one of the most important modern models from Alfa Romeo. It helped the Italian manufacturer regain relevance thanks to stunning design, sharp handling, and sufficient mass appeal, allowing the company to survive a difficult period. In 2010, it was replaced by the less successful in design Giulietta, production of which ended in 2020. Now Alfa Romeo has decided to try its hand again in the compact hatchback segment.
Competitors and platform
The new compact hatchback will compete in the C-segment with rivals such as the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class, Kia K4, and VW Golf. According to Alfa representatives, the car will be based on the new STLA ONE architecture from Stellantis. This platform was presented last week during Investor Day, where the group announced model plans for all its brands, but, interestingly, the hatchback was not mentioned in Alfa Romeo’s strategic announcement.
Technical features and limitations
The STLA One platform is global and designed to optimize Stellantis production, which is currently scattered across several different architectures. It scales for different car sizes and can work with both internal combustion engines and electric powertrains. However, unfortunately, such flexibility will not allow installing a V6 in the new hatchback to create a spiritual successor to the powerful 147 GTA model.
Additionally, Alfa Romeo confirmed the release of a new C-segment crossover on the STLA Medium platform. This model, which will occupy a position between the Junior and the Tonale, promises sporty dynamics, a premium interior, and Italian character, targeting one of the most crowded market segments in Europe.
Future of the Giulia and Stelvio
As for current models, Alfa Romeo states that the Giulia and Stelvio will remain in production until 2027, including the Quadrifoglio versions. This will give the company time to decide what exactly to borrow from the cancelled plans for their replacements. It was initially assumed that the new models would be exclusively electric, but such a strategy proved unacceptable for markets like the USA.
The manufacturer also hinted at another limited series model being developed as part of the Bottega Fuoriserie division following the release of the 33 Stradale. Details are not yet disclosed, although previous reports pointed to the creation of an exclusive low-volume car inspired by classic Alfa Romeo designs.

Interestingly, the decision to return to hatchbacks indicates a change in the brand’s priorities, which had previously almost completely focused on crossovers. In the face of fierce competition from German premium brands and Asian manufacturers, Alfa Romeo is betting on Italian style and emotionality, which once made the 147 an iconic model. At the same time, the abandonment of the V6 in the new hatchback shows that the company is focusing on modern, more environmentally friendly technologies, trying to find a balance between heritage and the demands of the future. The continuation of Giulia and Stelvio production until 2027 gives Alfa Romeo time for a thorough review of its strategy, especially considering the uncertainty in the electric vehicle market in different regions of the world.
