Rivian Prepares for R2 Launch: Configurator Now Available
Rivian is actively preparing for the long-awaited launch of the R2 model, which will take place on June 9th. This means there is less than two weeks until the start of order invitation emails and demo drive events.
With sales imminent, the manufacturer is informing customers about how the process will work. Order invitations will be sent out gradually, in batches, as delivery volumes ramp up.
Rivian explained that a customer’s location and the time they made a reservation are the primary factors determining when they will receive an invitation. The company added that customers located near Rivian service and demonstration centers will generally receive invitations earlier, as this allows for faster vehicle deliveries in the initial phase. R1 owners will also get priority, as will customers whose leases are ending.
First Models and Delivery Timelines
As the company previously explained, the first models available will be the R2 Performance SUVs with the Launch Package. The R2 Premium model will arrive later this year, and the R2 Standard in 2027.
If customers wish to wait for a future version, they will be notified when it becomes available for order. After a customer places an order and it is confirmed, delivery is expected to occur within 2–6 weeks.
While many customers will still have to wait, they can sign up for an R2 test drive. Priority will be given to reservation holders who have already received an invitation to order their vehicle.
R2 Configurator: Colors, Options, and Prices
In addition to informing fans about what to expect in the coming days and weeks, Rivian has launched the configurator for the R2. It is similar to the configurator for the R1 lineup and allows customers to choose between the Performance, Premium, and Standard trims.
At launch, the R2 Performance is offered in six colors, but only Esker Silver is free. Other shades cost between $1,000 and $2,000.
The situation is similar inside: the model comes standard with a black Black Crater Signature interior. If you prefer the warmer Coastal Cloud Signature interior, you will have to pay an extra $1,000 and wait until later this year.
While the R2 Performance is well-equipped, you will have to pay $755 for the spare tire. An 11.5 kW wall charger will cost $800, and floor mats will cost $225.
As a reminder, the R2 Performance starts at a price of $57,990 and features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 656 hp (489 kW / 665 PS) and 825 Nm of torque. This allows the model to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.6 seconds and have a range of 330 miles (531 km).
The launch of the configurator and clear clarification of the ordering procedure indicate that Rivian is moving to the final stage of preparation for the R2’s market launch. Prioritizing R1 owners and customers near service centers is a logical step to optimize logistics in the initial phase. It is worth noting that, despite the high starting price of the Performance version, additional options such as the spare tire can significantly increase the vehicle’s cost. This is a typical practice for automakers, which allows them to make the base price more attractive, but one should be prepared for additional costs when choosing a fully loaded configuration.
