Volkswagen revives a long-standing name for the Multivan, but not in all markets

Update for the T7 Multivan and California: new design and technologies

Volkswagen has introduced a series of updates for its T7 Multivan and California models. The changes affect style, technology, and functionality. In some countries, an old-new name has even appeared.

Although the updates are not radical enough to mistake the T7 for a completely new vehicle, they are still quite noticeable. The most significant visual changes are concentrated at the front: larger LED headlights, a revised lighting signature, and a cleaner bumper have appeared.

Volkswagen claims the new headlights not only look better. They are brighter, provide more uniform light distribution, and improve illumination both when driving straight and in corners. Higher trim levels feature an illuminated strip connecting the headlights on the front panel.

Interior: larger screen and new solutions

The cabin has received an even more thorough update. The redesigned dashboard now features improved materials, decorative stitching, and a larger 12.9-inch tablet display for the infotainment system, which sits independently on the panel. The digital instrument cluster has also been updated, offering the driver several layout options and more customization possibilities.

As in the electric ID. Buzz, the T7’s automatic transmission is now controlled via a stalk on the steering column, freeing up space on the center console. Wireless smartphone charging has become standard, charging power has significantly increased, and USB-C ports now deliver up to 60 watts. Even the cup holders have received lighting.

Automatic lane change

Volkswagen has also expanded the list of driver assistance systems. The new Travel Assist system can now recognize traffic lights and perform assisted lane changes on highways. The choice of powertrains remains unchanged. The lineup starts with a diesel engine producing 148 hp (150 PS) and a gasoline engine with 201 hp (204 PS). The flagship eHybrid 4MOTION combines all-wheel drive with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine delivering 242 hp (245 PS) and a 19.7 kWh battery pack.

Choose your length

Versions with long and short wheelbases are available, but if you choose the California camper for outdoor enthusiasts, it is only available with the long base. Both the Multivan and California can be ordered in a new top special edition “Generation”, offered in a new two-tone color scheme of Candy White and Sunset Red Metallic.

Revival of a historic name

An interesting detail concerns the name itself. In some markets, such as the UK, Volkswagen is also reviving the historic Caravelle badge, bringing back a name that has been associated with VW passenger vans for decades. Pragmatic Germany remains faithful to the functional Multivan name.

The update of the T7 lineup is a logical step to maintain competitiveness in the large passenger van and camper segment. By focusing on improving technology, especially in the cabin, and safety systems, VW aims to meet modern demands without drastically changing the platform. The revival of the Caravelle name for the British market could be a marketing move aimed at nostalgia and creating a clearer model hierarchy, while in Germany the Multivan name remains recognizable and established. Overall, this update makes the T7 more modern and convenient without losing its practicality.
