Carmaker that Abandoned Hydraulic Brakes Hides Details Behind Non-Disclosure Agreement with Brembo

Brembo launches revolutionary Sensify braking system

Braking technology has remained largely unchanged for decades, but now everything is changing. Brembo has begun mass production of its innovative Sensify system. It will be used by an unknown car manufacturer, currently described simply as a “global market leader.”

How the new technology works

Brembo keeps the details secret, but notes that Sensify sets a “new standard for intelligent braking” and will be standard equipment for a mysterious model. The system uses a “fluidless architecture” and abandons the hydraulics that have been the basis of braking systems for over a century.

Instead, Sensify is an electromechanical braking system that relies on advanced hardware and software. This allows for “precise and continuous modulation of braking forces, maintaining stable and controlled vehicle behavior in complex and changing road conditions.”

Benefits of independent wheel braking

The Sensify technology can independently apply braking force to individual wheels. This is a radical departure from traditional braking systems, which apply the same pressure to all four wheels simultaneously.

Instead of hydraulics, the system uses electrical signals and actuators to control braking. Thus, it combines familiar braking components (calipers and discs) with software, algorithms, and electric actuators that create the necessary pressure.

Less maintenance and better handling

Brembo claims the system has a number of advantages, including less maintenance, as there is no need to worry about fluid replacement or leaks. The company added:

“Even on seemingly uniform roads, the level of grip between the tires and asphalt is not always evenly distributed among all four wheels. For this reason, controlling the braking action on each wheel, as Sensify does, not only allows optimal use of available grip but also positively affects the stability and handling of the vehicle, preventing yawing or, during a turn, the classic understeer when braking.”

We can expect more details after the mysterious model’s presentation, but Brembo notes that other vehicles are also on the horizon. This means that “hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year” will feature the Sensify braking system in the near future.

This is truly a groundbreaking step for the automotive industry. Abandoning the hydraulics that have been the standard for decades opens the way to more precise, efficient, and safer braking. Independent control of each wheel allows not only to improve braking distance but also significantly impacts the overall dynamics of the vehicle, making it more predictable and stable in critical situations. The reduced need for maintenance is also a significant advantage for ordinary drivers. All that remains is to wait for which car manufacturer will be the first to implement this technology, but it is clear that Sensify has every chance of becoming the new industry standard.
