BMW is preparing a new off-roader to compete with the G-Wagen
The BMW company is likely developing a new top-tier off-roader that will become a competitor to the Mercedes G-Class. Production of the model could begin in South Carolina in the second half of 2029. This car could replace the XM as the brand’s flagship high-performance model.
Despite a broad lineup of SUVs, BMW still lacks a true off-roader capable of competing with the G-Class or Range Rover. However, the situation could change by 2029. Sources report that the new model, which has received the internal designation G74, will be built on the platform of the next-generation X5, which will improve its off-road capability.
Technical features and strategy
BMW seems to be betting on traditional internal combustion engines for this model. The car is expected to receive enhanced off-road capability, a more robust suspension, and specialized software for tackling challenging terrain.
BMW appears to believe that a rugged SUV will resonate more with high-end buyers than the road-focused XM.
The new off-roader could become the new “face” of the brand, replacing the XM, whose production may cease as early as 2028. However, convincing G-Class owners to switch to BMW will not be easy — 65% of them in the US choose a new Mercedes over an old one.
In recent years, BMW has been actively expanding its SUV lineup, focusing on models for active recreation. This move could help the brand establish itself in the premium off-road segment, where the Mercedes G-Class remains the undisputed leader. The success of the new model will depend not only on technical specifications but also on BMW’s ability to create the image of a true off-roader with a rich heritage.
