Denza Prepares a Hyper-Powered Version for a Nürburgring Record
Denza, a subsidiary of BYD, has begun testing an extreme version of its Z supercar on the famous Nürburgring track. This high-performance electric model aims to set a new lap record this autumn. The newcomer is expected to feature a three-motor powertrain with over 1973 horsepower.
From Goodwood to the Nürburgring
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Denza unveiled its new Z supercar. It was then confirmed that Coupe, Spider, and Racing versions would exist, as well as a special Special Edition variant that will attempt to break the Nürburgring lap record this autumn. It appears the company is already conducting early training, as a prototype was recently spotted on and near the track. As can be seen, the model is based on the Z Racing version but is significantly more extreme.
Aerodynamics and Lightweight Materials
Recall that the Racing version is equipped with a carbon fiber front splitter, underfloor vortex generators, and a set of vents. The model can also be fitted with an optional carbon fiber rear wing, allowing the coupe to generate 2,337 pounds (1,060 kg) of downforce at a speed of 217 mph (350 km/h). The features don’t end there: the car’s rear seats can be replaced with a roll cage.
The prototype, spotted by spy photographers, takes this concept further but is much more aggressive: it features multiple canards and a larger splitter. These are complemented by a modified body, a massive rear wing, and a diffuser that occupies roughly a third of the rear end. New wheels and tires are also visible, along with exposed carbon fiber body panels.
The latter should come as no surprise, as Denza previously stated that the Z Special Edition would have a “racing dual-layer composite body, including panels entirely made of carbon fiber.” The company also reported that the car will be equipped with a “drag reduction system that coordinates the front active diffuser and rear wing flap to reduce drag by 40%, while generating over 4,409 pounds (2,000 kg) of downforce at a speed of 186 mph (300 km/h).”
Incredible Power and Dynamics
The standard Z has a 76 kWh Blade battery that powers a three-motor drivetrain producing 1,582 hp (1,180 kW / 1,604 PS) and 914 lb-ft (1,240 Nm) of torque. This allows the coupe to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 2.25 seconds, reaching a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h). The Z Racing version is even faster: it reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.96 seconds, with a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h).
However, the Z Special Edition is the main star: it will feature a track thermal management system and a total output of over 1,973 hp (1,471 kW / 2,000 PS). Denza claims this will allow the model to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than 1.7 seconds.
The company stated that the car will “undergo additional development evaluation” before attempting the record, with details to be released “later.”
This prototype demonstrates how seriously Denza is committed to fighting for the record. The use of exposed carbon fiber, massive aerodynamic elements, and power exceeding 2,000 horsepower make this car one of the most ambitious electric supercars. If the claimed specifications are confirmed, the Z Special Edition could not only break the Nürburgring record but also become a new benchmark for the entire electric vehicle industry, showing that electric powertrains are capable of dynamics previously unattainable even for the best internal combustion hypercars. All that remains is to wait for the autumn attempt to see if this technological monster can realize its potential on the legendary track.
