This Square Daihatsu Van Considers Itself a Miniature Land Cruiser

Daihatsu Presents Three Custom Models at the Indonesian Auto Show

At the Gaikindo Indonesia Auto Show 2025, Daihatsu presented three unusual custom models. The most attention was drawn to the Gran Max Taft Guy van, which received a retro front-end design reminiscent of the Toyota Land Cruiser, as well as off-road elements.

These concepts were created in collaboration with Indonesian tuners and the National Modifiers Association. Two models are based on the commercial Gran Max van, and the third is based on the Ayla hatchback.

Gran Max Taft Guy: A Van with Off-Road Style

The design of the Gran Max Taft Guy is inspired by Japanese kei cars but with a more aggressive look. The usual practical design is replaced with square shapes, a new plastic grille with round LED headlights, a short hood, and a sturdier bumper with protection.

A custom bumper with LED lights is installed at the rear, and the original lights have been replaced with panels. The off-road style is emphasized by 16-inch Turbo Bastard wheels, a roof rack, and a spare tire on the rear doors.

Gran Max City Pop: A Nostalgic Van

The second van, the Gran Max City Pop, recreates the style of the 1980s Daihatsu Hijet. It features a retro grille, round headlights, classic orange lights, and new bumpers that completely change its appearance.

The model is also equipped with 16-inch wheels, side skirts, and retro-styled lights. This example was created for the Indonesian band D’Masiv, which explains the bright graphic elements on the body.

Ayla Retro Future: A Retro-Futuristic Hatchback

The Ayla Retro Future hatchback combines classic and modern elements. It has a completely redesigned body, new headlights, bumpers, and fenders, making it almost unrecognizable.

The car is equipped with 15-inch wheels, an Airsus pneumatic suspension, and a two-tone interior in orange and mint colors. The standard 1.2-liter engine producing 87 hp is likely retained under the hood.

The Gran Max Taft Guy will be available through a special raffle, and the Ayla Retro Future through a dance challenge on social media. The winners will be announced on October 12 at the IMX exhibition.

It is interesting that Daihatsu continues to experiment with retro styling, adapting it to modern models. The Gran Max Taft Guy is particularly impressive, combining the utility of a commercial van with the aesthetics of classic off-roaders. Similar projects could become a trend among manufacturers looking for new ways to attract attention to their models.
