Unique 1960 Ford Fairlane with Space-Age Design
This custom 1960 Ford Fairlane looks as if it arrived from a science fiction movie. Its domed roof, blue body, and unusual details make it a true show model. In September, the car will be sold at a Mecum auction along with other exhibits from the Larry Clermont collection.
Although the lower part of the body retains classic Fairlane features, such as the chrome bumper and round headlights, the upper part is completely redesigned. Instead of a conventional roof, two transparent domes, inspired by jet aircraft design, are installed. The interior is also styled in the 60s: white seat upholstery, a blue dashboard, and decorative elements made of plush materials.
Technical Features and History
Despite the external changes, the original Ford engine remains under the hood—a 223-cubic inch inline six-cylinder unit paired with an automatic transmission. The car has an odometer reading of 41,815 miles and is signed by famous automotive designers Gene Winfield and Darryl Starbird.
At Miami Art Basel 2017, this Fairlane received the “Judges’ Choice” award from Paolo Pininfarina.
Although the car is in working condition, it is unlikely that the new owner will use it for daily trips. It is more likely to become an exhibit in a private collection. This Fairlane is a true artifact of its era, combining nostalgia for the 60s with bold design solutions.
The automotive industry of the 1960s actively experimented with design inspired by the space race. The Spaceliner is one of the brightest examples of how automakers imagined the future. Its sale at auction may attract attention not only from collectors but also from fans of auto art.
