Ayrton Senna’s unique Mercedes 190E is up for sale
A 1985 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16, which has a direct connection to Formula 1 history, can now be purchased at auction. This model was considered Mercedes’ equivalent of the original BMW M3, but today its value is significantly lower – around $30,000 for a good example. However, this particular model will cost ten times more due to its connection to a motorsport legend.
Car’s history and connection to Senna
The silver sedan was purchased new by Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna in 1985 when he was living in Great Britain. Senna’s interest in this sports model arose after participating in the legendary ‘Race of Champions’ at the Nürburgring in 1984, where he, then a young promising driver, drove a similar car.
Senna fell for the sporty compact after competing in one in 1984.
Competing against other Formula 1 stars who were also driving Mercedes 190Es, Senna won in difficult weather conditions, demonstrating the talent that would later earn him three championship titles.
Personal use and subsequent history
Senna was not affiliated with Mercedes at the time but decided to purchase this car with his own money. He collected it from the manufacturer’s plant and drove it to his home near London. Behind the wheel of this right-hand drive car, he drove about 25,000 miles before passing it on to the next owner. This happened before his move to Monaco after signing a contract with McLaren.
The car currently has over 154,000 miles on the odometer and is located in Australia, where it was transported by the current owner in 2004. Despite the significant mileage, the car is in excellent condition, retains its original documents, instructions, fire extinguisher, Becker Mexico audio system, tool kit, and even an unopened first aid kit.
Technical features and unique details
The car retains its original Cosworth-developed 2.3-liter engine producing 185 hp, as well as a five-speed manual transmission. Among the unique details are the original registration document in Senna’s name, as well as Niki Lauda’s signature in the engine bay, which was added during the 2016 Australian Grand Prix.
Ayrton Senna bought the 190 new and drove it for 25,000 miles.
Value and auction
This Mercedes 190E, which once roamed the roads of Surrey, is now estimated at £220,000–£250,000. For motorsport fans, this is a unique opportunity to own a piece of Formula 1 history.
This car not only preserves technical authenticity but also holds special emotional value associated with the name of one of the greatest drivers of all time. Its history, from the victory at the Nürburgring to its daily use by Senna, makes it a true find for collectors.
