The Dacia Duster off-roader became one of the Renault Group’s most reliable global models, significantly expanding its presence beyond Europe, particularly in developing markets. Now, India is preparing to receive a new version of this rugged SUV under the Renault brand, which will have stylistic changes specifically tailored for the local market.
History and Basis of the New Model
Buyers in India only had access to the first-generation Duster, which was sold from 2012 to 2022. The new version, officially confirmed back in March 2024, is based on the third-generation SUV design. Its launch will occur in parallel with the presentation of the Nissan Tekton — a closely related model built on the same platform.
Renault published a short teaser of the future Indian Duster, which shows a recognizable silhouette but with new visual accents.
External Differences and Design
The most noticeable change is the front end: instead of the Y-shaped LED headlights of the global model, thin daytime running lights will appear, although the headlight housings seem to remain unchanged. Previously shown teasers have already revealed the new front bumper design, including an enlarged protective plate that emphasizes the car’s off-road character.
The rear will also be different: a full-width LED strip will unite the rear lights, framing the prominent Renault logo. The profile view has not been revealed yet, but it is widely expected to be virtually identical to other versions without significant differences.
Interior and Equipment
The cabin layout is expected to mirror other versions of the Duster and the related Nissan Tekton, although trim materials may vary depending on the market. Higher trim levels will likely offer a 10.1-inch multimedia touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof — an option that has become almost mandatory in this segment for Indian buyers.
Technical Specifications and Production
According to Autocar India, the new Duster will initially be offered with a petrol engine, and a self-charging hybrid variant is set to join the lineup within the next year. Technical details have not been disclosed yet, but the set of powertrains is expected to match the global model.
Unlike the global version produced in Turkey, the Indian Renault Duster is expected to be assembled locally at the company’s plant in Chennai. The official premiere is scheduled for January 26. Preliminary price estimates place the SUV in the range of 10 to 20 lakh rupees.
Competitive Environment and Global Strategy
In the competitive Indian mid-size SUV market, the Duster will face well-known models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, MG Astor, and the upcoming Tata Sierra. This is a dense field, but Renault is clearly aiming for a share in the high-volume mid-segment with an updated version of a familiar formula.
Outside India, the Duster continues to wear the Renault badge in regions where the Dacia brand has low recognition. This includes markets such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, where the car’s utilitarian appeal matters more than the specific emblem on its grille.
The return of the Duster to the Indian market several years after the discontinuation of the first generation underscores the strategic importance of this segment for Renault. Localizing production and adapting the design demonstrate a deep understanding of local preferences, especially the emphasis on details like a panoramic roof. The success of this model could significantly strengthen the brand’s position in one of the world’s most dynamic auto markets, where competition for the buyer is extremely fierce. The planned expansion of the lineup with a hybrid version also aligns with the general trends towards electrification, even in the budget segment.
