Unique Tommykaira-Tuned Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R Listed for Auction
In the world of Japanese automotive tuning, the name Tommykaira carries significant weight. This company gained fame for its unique approach and high-quality modifications, transforming Nissan Skylines into rare, faster, and more aggressive versions. One of its rarest creations—the Tommykaira R-Z model, based on the legendary Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R—has appeared for sale, offering a unique chance to own a true icon of the tuning era.
This car is not just another modified Skyline. It is one of the very few examples produced by the company. Estimates suggest only a few dozen such cars were ever built. This specific example began its life as a GT-R V-Spec and then underwent a complete visual and technical overhaul in Tommykaira’s workshops.
Exterior and Design
The exterior changes begin at the front, where the redesigned bumper, updated air intakes, and new radiator grilles give the Skyline a more purposeful and aggressive look. This is complemented by a front bumper spoiler that adds sharpness without excessive theatrics.
Widened fenders and extended side skirts increase the drama of the image, and the rear of the car is crowned by a fixed two-plane wing on aluminum struts. While some Skyline purists might prefer a completely stock appearance, the changes made by Tommykaira certainly do not cross the line of good taste.
The Heart of the Modifications: The Engine
Even more exciting than the exterior are the changes under the hood. The legendary 2.6-liter Nissan RB26DETT twin-turbocharged engine was modified to produce 530 horsepower. This significantly exceeds not only the official factory rating of 276 hp but also the actual power of stock cars, which was around 320 hp.
Tommykaira was able to achieve this additional power by increasing the displacement to 2.7 liters, installing a special crankshaft, and fitting larger turbochargers.
Other Key Upgrades
A number of other important upgrades were carried out. For example, the car received new Bilstein shock absorbers and an AP-Racing braking system with six-piston calipers. The sports coupe also sits on distinctive 19-inch forged magnesium wheels with a stunning gold finish.
Auction and Expectations
The car is listed for auction through the company Bingo, with the sale scheduled for early next month. The description states that since its release, it has covered only 20,191 km (12,546 miles), with the current owner adding only 2,000 km (about 1,200 miles) over the past 15 years. The car is expected to sell for between 95 million yen (approximately $603,000) and 105 million yen (approximately $666,000).
The appearance of such a car on the market is always an event. Its price reflects not only the uniqueness and quality of execution but also its status as a true legend among collectors and fans of Japanese automotive engineering. The low mileage and service history make this example particularly attractive to investors who understand that the value of such cars only increases over time. This is not just a car; it is a time capsule embodying the peak of engineering thought and tuning culture of the late 90s and early 2000s.
