This Small American Car Company Just Broke Koenigsegg’s Record

The Battle for the Laguna Seca Record Continues

If you’re having trouble remembering who currently holds the production car lap record on the legendary Laguna Seca track, you’re not alone. For nearly five years, this title has been passed back and forth between two brands: Koenigsegg and Czinger. And now, the lead has changed hands again, and with a significant advantage.

The History of the Rivalry

It all started in July 2021, when Czinger stunned the automotive community by posting a time of 1:25.44 with its not-yet-production-ready 21C hypercar. This result broke the long-standing record held by the McLaren Senna.

In August 2024, during Monterey Car Week, Koenigsegg responded with its Jesko, setting a time of 1:24.86. But just a few days later, Czinger reclaimed the top spot, improving the result to 1:24.75.

The Latest Development

Earlier this year, Czinger took the production version of the 21C and set five records on different tracks, including Laguna Seca with a time of 1:24.39. However, Koenigsegg responded again, announcing a new record of 1:24.16.

Now the situation has changed once more. Czinger has reclaimed the title, announcing an incredible time of 1:22.30. That’s nearly two full seconds faster than Koenigsegg’s latest result.

The Context of the Victory and Future Challenges

It’s worth noting that Koenigsegg’s latest record run took place under a noise restriction of no more than 90 dB. Because of this, an additional muffler and heavier wheels were installed on the car, which could have affected the result. Therefore, it’s quite likely that Koenigsegg is already planning a new attempt.

This rivalry is a great example of how competition pushes manufacturers beyond their limits, ultimately benefiting all car enthusiasts. Both brands, especially Czinger, are relatively new players in the hypercar market, yet they are already demonstrating outstanding results, avoiding loud advertising and focusing on real performance.

The future of this confrontation could become even more interesting if McMurtry joins it with its Spéirling, which is planned for production by 2026. Experts believe that if this happens, its result could remain unbeaten until the end of the decade, even for such ambitious rivals as Koenigsegg and Czinger.
