Mercedes-AMG C-Class Electric Car to Challenge BMW M3 on Batteries

Electric Mercedes-AMG C-Class Approaches Series Production

Mercedes introduced the electric C-Class back in April, so now all attention is focused on its “charged” AMG version. Recently, spy photographers managed to capture a prototype during testing in the Alps. The new model is expected to be significantly more attractive than the latest GT 4-Door.

Design and Exterior Differences

Although the prototype is heavily camouflaged, it closely resembles the standard model. However, a fully closed version of the iconic Panamericana radiator grille can be expected. The images also suggest that the front bumper will be similar to the one installed on versions with the AMG Line package.

The side panels make it easier to identify this car as an AMG variant: lightweight alloy wheels are visible, complemented by a high-performance braking system. The latter includes ventilated discs and golden brake calipers. These are joined by black mirror caps and familiar side skirts.

While it looks unusual to see an AMG version without four exhaust tailpipes, the electric C-Class EV appears to have an active rear spoiler. The presence of a more sporty diffuser would also come as no surprise.

Interior and Equipment

Spy photographers were unable to look inside, but the cabin will likely largely carry over from the standard model. This means a minimalist interior with the MBUX Superscreen can be expected, consisting of a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, and a 14-inch display for the passenger.

Buyers will also be able to order the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, a dual wireless smartphone charger, and a panoramic glass roof with ambient lighting. The model also offers Burmester 3D and 4D audio systems with stainless steel speaker grilles.

Since this is a high-performance version, the interior is expected to be equipped with an AMG steering wheel and standard sports seats. It would also not be surprising to see unique trims and special accents.

Technical Specifications and Power

The standard C400 4MATIC Electric version is equipped with a 94 kWh battery pack powering a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 482 hp (360 kW / 489 PS) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. This allows the model to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and achieve a WLTP range of up to 473 miles (762 km). Buyers will also get access to 330 kW DC fast charging, allowing them to add 202 miles (325 km) of range in just 10 minutes.

The AMG version will undoubtedly be more powerful, but details remain unknown for now. However, rumors suggest the car could feature a tri-motor setup with around 789 hp (588 kW / 800 PS). Whether these assumptions will be confirmed remains to be seen, but the debut could take place later this year.

Thus, the new electric Mercedes-AMG C-Class will become a direct competitor to the future BMW M3 EV. Given the claimed specifications of the standard version and the potential tri-motor setup for the “charged” modification, the German automaker is clearly aiming for leadership in the high-performance electric vehicle segment. The emphasis on active aerodynamics, powerful brakes, and a luxurious interior indicates that the company seeks to combine daily comfort with track dynamics, which will be a key advantage in the battle for customers.
