Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia may be delayed due to technical issues
Alfa Romeo has revised its plans for a full transition to electric vehicles by adding hybrid versions to its lineup. However, this strategic shift has led to technical challenges. Initially, the company intended to launch the new Stelvio this year, but the timeline may now be pushed back.
Why are there delays?
Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato confirmed that work on the new models is ongoing, but due to additional development of conventional engines, the timeline is still being finalized. When asked about the 2026 launch, he replied:
“We will keep you informed.”
Representatives of the Cassino plant union, where the cars will be assembled, reported that the production lines are ready, but the models themselves are not yet finalized. Particular difficulties have arisen with hybrid powertrains on the STLA Large platform.
Technical challenges
Stellantis engineers are facing problems adapting a 4-cylinder engine to this platform, which was previously used only with 3-liter units. Additionally, plant representatives confirmed that there are currently no prototype models with internal combustion engines.
Stellantis also acknowledges the delays, attributing them to changing market conditions, European regulations, and tariff policies. The new STLA Large platform, which will be used for the Stelvio and Giulia, is already being utilized in Dodge and Jeep models. Although the platform supports both electric and hybrid versions, the exact specifications of the new models have not yet been disclosed. Rumors suggest that the electric Quadrifoglio versions could deliver around 1000 hp, but there is no official confirmation.
In light of these developments, it is clear that automakers are finding it increasingly difficult to balance traditional technologies with new market demands. Delays with the Stelvio and Giulia could impact the brand’s competitiveness in the premium segment, especially amid the rapid development of electric models by other manufacturers.
