Tesla is Updating Graphics in Model S and X
Tesla owners can expect significant changes in the display of information inside the cabin. According to a hacker’s data, the company is preparing to replace the current graphics system with a more modern one that will resemble high-quality 3D renders from video games. This move will bring Tesla closer to manufacturers like Rivian, Ford, and Volvo, which already use similar technologies.
The new system will likely be built on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, which is traditionally used in game development. Hacker GreenTheOnly discovered changes in the code indicating preparation for an update for the Model S and X. He noted:
Tesla is adding Unreal Engine-based visualization (currently uses Godot). Binary files are already being distributed, starting with firmware 2025.20, so far only for AMD-based Model S and X.
Interactive Capabilities
The new system is expected to allow drivers to interact with a 3D model of the car on the screen—rotate it, open doors, or the hood. This graphics could also be integrated into Autopilot and FSD interfaces. One enthusiast even created a concept of what it might look like.
Can’t wait for the updated FSD visualizations on Unreal Engine. Ray tracing on HW4 will be incredible.
Although Tesla is not a pioneer in this field, the transition to more detailed graphics could significantly improve the user experience. For example, GMC already uses similar technologies in the Hummer EV to display drive modes and vehicle status. Given the popularity of gaming graphics, the update will likely be well-received by Tesla owners.
There are currently some difficulties with activating Unreal Engine on the cluster, but the car avatar on the main screen is already powered by it. You can now interact with it, and it has become more detailed.
These changes underscore how automotive interfaces are becoming increasingly interactive and visually appealing. Considering that competitors have already implemented similar solutions, Tesla is likely striving to keep up with trends by offering owners a more modern design.
