Good News: Mitsubishi Eclipse Returns. Bad News: It’s a Rebadged Nissan Leaf

Return of a Legendary Name

Mitsubishi has decided to revive the Eclipse name, but not for a sporty coupe as fans expected. The new model is called the Eclipse Sportback EV and will be a fully electric crossover. The manufacturer confirmed that the car will arrive on the North American market in the second half of this year as a 2027 model.

Technical Basis and Design

Despite expectations, the new Eclipse Sportback EV is not an independent Mitsubishi development. In fact, under the Triple Diamond badge lies only a slightly revised version of the new Nissan Leaf. The differences consist of unique front and rear bumpers, as well as distinctive LED lighting that visually sets this model apart from its Japanese counterpart.

Mitsubishi has confirmed the Eclipse Sportback EV will reach North America as a 2027 model in the back half of this year, and beneath that Triple Diamond badge sits nothing more than a lightly reskinned new-generation Nissan Leaf.

Key Features of the Model

* The story is developing…

Thus, Mitsubishi continues its strategy of using iconic names for new models, albeit in a completely different segment. The Eclipse Sportback EV will become part of the brand’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle lineup. It is worth noting that this approach allows the company to bring new models to market faster by leveraging the developments of alliance partners, which is a common practice in the modern automotive industry. For fans of the original Eclipse, this may be disappointing, but for the electric crossover market, it is another step toward diversifying the offerings.
