Mercedes-AMG prepares Mythos with V8 and flat-plane crankshaft to take on BMW M4

Key details about the new prototype

Just when it seemed the Mercedes-AMG CLE Mythos could no longer physically take in more air, engineers cut another opening in it. The latest prototype was spotted during testing in Germany: it has a huge hood air intake, revised aerodynamics, and several other tweaks showing that AMG is working hard on cooling its hottest coupe.

According to our spy photographer, the changes are a result of an engine failure that occurred during the last eight months of testing. We cannot independently confirm this detail, but something definitely made AMG rethink airflow since the Mythos was last seen in May. Perhaps the engineers were simply trying to hide the air intake from prying eyes until the very end.

Why a new air intake was needed

Early prototypes had a conventional hood, while this car features a large opening above the engine bay. AMG engineers are also testing the car without a front license plate to maximize airflow through the nose, although a front plate is mandatory in Germany.

Among other novelties is the first unobstructed look at the coupe’s carbon-fiber roof with a central recess, which had not been visible before. In addition, the headlights now feature extra camouflage, which according to our sources hides the star-shaped graphics used in the updated CLE lineup. Our team even managed to capture the new and old Mythos prototypes driving together on the Nürburgring, so they can be compared directly.

Ventilation and even more ventilation

The rest of the design remains unchanged — just as extreme as before. There are vents next to the headlights, tooth-like slits in the flared front fenders, a serious front splitter, and wide rear wheel arches. At the rear, there is an adjustable wing on racing pylons, and below it are four exhaust tips arranged diagonally.

And unlike AMG’s latest electric performance models, these exhaust tips are meant to deliver a true V8 sound, not a synthesized version. The Mythos will get a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, developed by AMG itself based on the new Mercedes unit. According to preliminary data, output will be approximately 637–646 hp (646–655 PS).

More CLE models with V8

This would mean the gap between the Mythos and the current six-cylinder CLE 53 will be around 200 hp (203 PS). But this car is far more than just added power. Our sources say AMG is targeting serious weight reduction and outstanding track performance, so comparisons with the legendary CLK 63 AMG Black Series are becoming increasingly inevitable.

According to reports, production will not begin before 2027, and the run will be strictly limited. The price is not yet known, but the Mythos is not for those hunting for a bargain. The good news for the rest of us: AMG is already working on a more affordable version with the 63 badge and a V8 engine, which is expected to compete with the BMW M4.

What to expect next

If AMG’s plans come true, the Mythos will become not just a top version of the CLE, but a kind of statement about the brand’s return to its roots — a powerful V8 coupe with minimal weight and genuine character. It is also worth noting that technologies from this project, including the turbocharged flat-plane V8, will appear in other AMG models as well. This means that even if the Mythos itself turns out to be an exclusive model, its engine and experience in track-focused tuning will become the basis for more affordable future offerings. For now, everything we see only heightens anticipation for the official premiere, which, judging by everything, will take place no earlier than 2027.
