Mercedes is preparing updated off-roaders
The Mercedes-Benz company is actively working on updating its model range. Following the recent presentations of the new VLE and S-Class Maybach versions, the brand is preparing to showcase the restyled versions of three popular SUVs: the GLE, GLE Coupe, and GLS. The official premiere is scheduled for March 31.
Expected design changes
The automaker is keeping the details of the updates secret; however, spy photos have allowed for a general understanding of the changes. The models will receive a moderate redesign affecting the front end. A new bumper, a larger radiator grille, and LED headlights with a characteristic “starry” pattern are expected.
Changes at the rear will be less noticeable but will also include updated rear lights with the same theme, an updated bumper, and possible minor adjustments to the trunk lid.
Interior and technology modernization
The most significant updates are likely to occur inside the vehicles. Preliminary data indicates the installation of a new panoramic display stretching from pillar to pillar. The specific screen configuration is not yet known, but its form may replicate the solution already used in the electric GLC model.
If so, the base equipment may include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch multimedia system. For an additional charge, an MBUX Superscreen system with a separate 14-inch display for the passenger may be offered, while the top MBUX Hyperscreen version will have a nearly full-width panel with a 39.1-inch diagonal.
An updated instrument panel, modernized controls, a new center console, and possibly a new steering wheel are also expected. Technological updates may include a virtual assistant with elements of artificial intelligence.
Powertrain updates
Changes will also occur under the hood of the updated models. The range of powertrains will be modernized to improve performance and efficiency. For example, the 2027 model year GLS 580 version may receive a new bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8, which recently debuted on the updated S-Class. This engine develops 530 hp.
The 450 modifications will likely be equipped with an improved turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. Its power may remain at 376 hp, but the torque, according to preliminary data, will increase by 44 lb-ft, which should positively affect acceleration dynamics.
The presentation at the end of the month will reveal all the details. Updating the GLE and GLS lineups is a logical step to maintain competitiveness in the premium off-road vehicle market, where technology and design play a key role. The introduction of panoramic screens and engine modernization align with the general trends in the automotive industry towards cabin digitization and increased efficiency. The success of these models is important for Mercedes, as SUVs constitute a significant share of the brand’s sales worldwide.
