New spy photos reveal that Mercedes-Benz is preparing an update for its SL roadster. Changes to the exterior and interior are expected, affecting all versions of the car, from sporty AMG to luxurious Maybach.
Exterior Updates
German automakers are constantly refining their models. Mercedes-Benz is no exception, and the SL roadster, introduced four years ago, is already preparing for a facelift. Although the current SL is considered one of the most beautiful cars of the brand, an update is a logical step. Photos of prototypes, including AMG and Maybach versions, show that the changes will be noticeable but not radical.
The redesigned headlights visible on both test cars now feature star-shaped elements that function as turn signals and daytime running lights.
Camouflage hides the details well, but the overall shape of the headlights will likely remain close to the current one. At the rear on the AMG version, the familiar configuration with four exhaust pipes remains unchanged. The shape of the taillights will also be preserved, although the LED lighting elements appear to have been slightly updated.
Interior Expectations
Photographers have not yet managed to capture the interior of the updated SL, but the car is expected to debut with a slightly redesigned steering wheel.
In addition, further interior updates are possible, potentially including a version of the massive MBUX Hyperscreen that appeared in the updated S-Class.
For some, this might be a step back compared to the current SL interior, but large screens are currently in trend.
New V8 Powertrain
The scale of changes to the powertrains is not yet clear. However, there is a high probability that all V8-powered versions, including the SL 63, will transition to the new M177 Evo engine. This is a 4.0-liter bi-turbo unit with a flat-plane crankshaft, which recently debuted in the S-Class and complies with the stringent Euro 7 emission standards.
In the standard mild-hybrid version, this engine produces 530 hp and 723 Nm of torque. For the SL 63, these figures are likely to be increased. The previous model produced 577 hp and 800 Nm, while the flagship hybrid SL 63 E Performance version develops 805 hp and 1419 Nm of torque.
The SL roadster update is taking place during a period when the luxury sports car market is undergoing significant changes under pressure from electrification and environmental requirements. The transition to a new, more environmentally friendly V8 engine that simultaneously retains high performance characteristics is a strategic move for Mercedes-AMG. This allows the brand to satisfy both fans of traditional powerful engines and regulatory demands. Subtle yet recognizable design changes indicate the brand’s desire to keep the model relevant without losing its classic DNA, which is especially important for an icon like the SL.
